Kinja'd!!!

Capital U, ugly. I like all of mazda’s current line up, I think they did a great job with the suv, which could have gone very wrong, but this thing is terrible. Weird hips, disproportionate glass, strange deep set headlights, unbalanced overhangs and more. If you put you’re hand over the back half, the front looks like the start to a gorgeous luxury sedan, the back looks like a dog dropping a turd. I think they left out the actual hatch? What ever it is it’s disproportionate and ugly.

Im starting to believe the comments on the fp are not organic.

Take a moment to look at the amount of glass on the rear window.

Can it even be called a rear window? It’s like a postbox out there.

You can love it, just don’t call it pretty.

No, I definitely think it’s pretty. Beautiful lines, a great front end, and one of the few times I feel like the modern high beltline works well. It’s like a curvaceous aggressive baby wagon. Which is fantastic

It’s like if Mazda designed the Alfa Brera and I love it.

Eh, concepts always look more conservative once they’re actually put into production. They took all of the RX-Vision design cues and forced them onto a hatchback body, which doesn’t translate well IMO.

However if they nail this interior on the production car, they will have done exactly what they need to do.

It’s not ugly so much as unrealistic. Therefore rather tricky to pass judgement on.

If nothing else you can’t fault Mazda for actually trying. It’s more than a few of their competitors are doing.

I like it until the B-pillar, then it gets a bit wonky.

That’s a wonky-ass render and unlikely to be indicative of a real car. This pic from the same fp post looks less crazy.

Kinja'd!!!

But they’re all wacky ass renders of what would be a concept car not a production model.

This is a hotter take than it should be, and I agree with you 100%. I also thought the RX-Vision was ugly and couldn’t understand how so many people around here loved it.

I agree that this hatch looks kinda weird, especially from this angle. A broader issue to me is that every Mazda concept since the Shinari has been a riff off the same general design concepts, inside and out. That’s not a bad thing. It’s just that I don’t quite understand why they keep making these expensive concepts. Maybe it’s just for marketing purposes on the show circuit? Seems to me that just releasing their excellent new production (or preproduction) cars would be better unless they’re going to make a radically different concept.

I hate how the rear overhang is tiny and the front one is big. Either would be fine if the other end matched it better.

The bigger 4-door coupe concept they showed is absolutely gorgeous, but this one does seem like a compromise, like they wanted to do the same thing but couldn’t figure out how to scale it down and still look right.

The back looks like one of those 2-box humpback 1940s/late 30s cars, but not in a good way, I like most of those.

yeah - the rear hatch would extend over the heads of the rear passengers. Doubt it would pass crash tests. Maybe a design exercise for the next 3?

They fudged up the back.

The could improve the front a little bit by making in slightly less aggressive.

All in all, good effort. I definitely like the sedan and coupe concepts better.

The scary thing with the Lexus is that they might actually make it.

The great thing about the Mazda is that they will actually make (something like) it.

Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe second generation was worse.

I agree there’s not enough glass back there. I have the same complaint with the new CX-5.

A lot of cars on sale have this problem. Some of the window lines must be higher for safety reasons, but I bet there’s some ‘style over substance’ too.

It’s even worse when the roof starts sloping at the back, meaning you don’t get any headroom back there either. Can’t wait for this fad to end. :/
