I’m glad Brian’s stomach is feeling better. I’d hate for him to have to take his shirt off on camera again.

I’m looking at buying one which is going up for auction on Friday. The most I can get is a video call walk around as it’s at the other end of the country, so some insider info would be quite useful. Is it worth trawling IH8MUD?

Fantastic! FJ62 with the 3fe, its MOT record checks out, with any and all advisories being fixed by the next test date. If you wouldn’t mind casting your eye over the advert and pointing out anything you can see it’d be most appreciated. For an 80's Toyota it looks remarkably clean and tidy. Obviously the price listed is just a ‘guide’ price.

It’s definitely been aftermarket’ed. The engine bay looks so empty compared to American FJ62's with all the smog equipment...

Dual battery setup was likely added by an owner at some time, the a/c dryer has been relocated to the firewall. Wheels and running boards are of course, also aftermarket. The hanging wires at the shifter and in the rear cargo area might be worth looking into. The 3FE petrol engine had a very short lifespan, just two or three years in the FJ62 and two short years in the FJ80. Parts are becoming more difficult to find for this engine, at least in North America.

Per just about any Land Cruiser with a solid front axle, be sure to inspect the steering knuckle for any audible noise while turning (unlikely at 125k kms) or excessive oil which indicates an axle seal leak.

Great, thank you. Good spot on the dual battery setup and the wires under the dash, I missed those. How mechanically similar are the internals of the 3fe to the 2f? This J62 is an import from Australia so I’m not sure what is and isn’t standard trim for the Aussie market. HHFP posted an FJ60 buyers guide which mentions general rust, but more specifically roof panel rust and along the gutters too. Are there any other notorious spots to ask about? I’m assuming I’ll only get 5-10mins with the guy on the phone so I’m just knocking up a quick list of what to get to first.

Any sort of maintenance records would be valuable however uncommon it is to find a truck with them. In addition to the roof panel and gutters, rust can accumulate around the rocker panels, wheel wells, and rear quarter panel, though photos don’t indicate much if any rust perforation in these areas. Some photos of the undercarriage would be helpful here, and I’d certainly slide underneath to see if anything has been disassembled and meddled with. This might be indicated by goopy seals or extra clean components on a dirtier vehicle.

The 3FE head is commonly swapped onto a 2F block, so the cylinder layout and bore is nearly identical. The 2F has a longer stroke (hence con rods and crankshaft) bringing the displacement to 4.2l instead of the 3FE’s 4.0l. There’s a few differences in the power steering and alternator, I’m unsure if the distributor or the block are different.

There is substantial market support for most other components such as axles, suspension, bumpers, etc, and that transmission carried over to the FJ80 along with the 3FE up until the early 90's. Parts for a manual transmission swap should be incredibly easy to come by.
