Brought my car to the BMW dealer for its fancy new shrapnel-free driver’s airbag. They left transparent blue tape over the BMW logo for me to remove, which I did right after taking this picture. Unless... the blue tape is what prevents it from spewing shrapnel. Oops.

Got mine taken care of a few weeks ago. Had to get my service manager to elevate my case after waiting over a year...

I went through about a year of calling BMW USA and being told I was in a lower-priority region based on humidity, and to keep waiting. Eventually I got a recall notice in the mail saying it was my turn for a new airbag and to schedule an appointment at a dealer.

Ooh, mine is done but my wife just got a letter on hers... probably should do something about that.
Our problem is the nearest dealer is 90 minutes away, and we both work normal weekday jobs. We literally planned a whole trip to Boston around doing one of the airbags on my car, just waiting while it was done.

I’m pretty sure the tape is to prevent the badge from being scratched during shipping. I guess the dealer left it on to show, “yup, this one is new!”

My local BMW dealer (that I don’t actually go to for much of anything since my car is out of warranty and modified) is 8 miles from home. They got me in and out in maybe an hour. I brought my laptop, sat in the lounge, did some work, drank coffee, and ate a free gourmet cookie while I waited, then headed in to the office.
All that’s very nice, but not nice enough to pay $45/hr more than my indy mechanic’s labor rate, and full BMW MSRP on parts.

I went with my wife and kids, and took full advantage of the nice waiting area stocked with free snacks, drinks, etc. That was nice, but yeah if it was closer I still wouldn’t go. I like my $70/hr indy shop thank you.

The blue tape is there to call attention to the fact that they gave you a new propeller badge.

Wooooow you get a whole new bag? No wonder they took so long. For Mazda and Chrysler we just get the inflators or inflators with bags. The covers get transferred. Unless its like a Crossfire or something goofy.

The service advisor mentioned that depending on the car, some BMWs get only an inflator vs. a full bag.

Mine is still supposedly not under recall according to both the Honda and airbagrecall.com lookups - but I just got a postcard from TK Holdings about the Takata bankruptcy. Things that make you go hmmm...

Depends on passenger vs driver. Driver bags are literally ejected into the cover with the inflator at manufacturing. A lot of people looked a lot of ways to see if it was feasible on a driver air bag and nope. For passenger bags the inflator nests in a housing that is more or less serviceable in most applications.
