More Problems for Air Canada at SFO

Kinja'd!!!

Back in July, disaster was narrowly averted when an Air Canada Airbus A320 almost landed on a taxiway full of waiting aircraft, rather than the runway adjacent to it. On Sunday, another Air Canada A320 was on final approach to SFO when an air traffic controller instructed the pilots five times to go around but the Air Canada crew failed to respond and continued with their landing. Listening to the tower recording, you can hear the controller call and receive no response, then work to move aircraft out of the way for the A320. After landing, the Air Canada pilots reported a problem with communications, but it’s unclear if the radios were malfunctioning, on the wrong frequency, or if the pilots simply ignored them. You can read more about the incident at Aviation Herald .

We are all hard of hearing. We say eh? at the end of every sentence because we genuinely cannot hear you.

eh?

Does the ATC need to repeat each call in French? (/sarc)

I like the thought of the planes being flown by hardliner Quebecois who refuse to comply unless instructions are given in French

Real life imitating Flight Simulator X multiplayer again. Are you familiar with the youtube antics of AirForceProud95?

I am not. Never did any sim stuff.

He’s a kid in college, currently training to be a pilot (with an Air Force dad), who has become a minor celebrity on YouTube for his brilliant use of ATC and comms in Flight Simulator. He also posts flight vlogs and flight sim equipment/full immersion virtual sim videos.

The way I explained it to my dad was that there are two major kinds of people in Flight Simulator X: the kids/stoners/casual types who don’t really know what they’re doing and may have attention span issues/controlling parents who only let them do flight sim, and the second group who are trying to engage in realism/practice and familiarity. His primary shtick is to annoy group 1 by pretending to be a psychotic member of group 2, though he does other things as well.

Here’s one where he’s in the ATC tower, intentionally winding up the pilots on the server.

Here’s one in which he encounters someone much stranger than he is and just lets things play out.

One of his running gags, particularly as ATC, is to instruct people who are blathering or being odd to squawk 7600 - capitalizing on a double meaning of “communication failure”.

I showed him to my cousin who used to be crew on a Herky-bird, and he laughed really, really hard.

Proud member of group 2! But I always do multiplayer with the group 1 types of people so I can relax and not worry about if I’m getting things wrong. :)

Plus like, it’s always fun to bring an Antonov 225 to a prop room.

I routinely listen to the tower when I’m at the airport, and some of the tower instructions actually sound that fast. Of course, after years of experience, you sort of know what to expect, but I sometimes wonder how the pilots are able to follow it all.

I really like the one where he’s bickering over callsigns. “This is me.” “Um, *I’m* me. Who are you?” Later, “This is Airwolf” in Russian accent.

Group 2 wouldn’t exist without people maturing out of group 1, so being nice to them or sane is its own reward.

I never got seriously into MSFS, but I did play a lot of realistic-tending military flight sims like the Jane’s series, so I kind of get the ethos. Spending a lot of time at the stick, just doing one’s job while nothing much happens... until it does.

FSX is like literally my favourite program of all time. Not GTA V, nor any Forza ever made will top it for me.

My favourite thing to do is set a bunch of random part failures and see if I can safely land the plane. My favourite landing had to be touching an A320 down in Lake Michigan soft enough to fool FSX into not giving me “CRASHED!” message for about 30 seconds.

The last time I flew MS Flight Sim, I landed the Cessna 172 on the deck of the aircraft carrier Nimitz and parked there and saved the game so I could start later.

I wonder if they’re still employed. Everyone else on approach had to be hearing the Air Canada not responding and waiting to hear what would be coming next.

I don’t know. Did they fire the guys who almost landed on the taxiway? That would have made Tenerife look like a fender bender. In reading some of the forums about this, I think it’s SOP for a plane to follow its last confirmed order if it loses comms. So the last thing they acknowledged was the “clear to land.” However, I also read that the tower signaled them with a light of some sort that should have told them to go around. They ignored that too.
