I guess my car is "rare"

I enjoy looking at data so I found a thread on the Saab 92x forum about production numbers for the ‘05-’06 Saab 92x in the US and Canada. Later on in the thread a few years later, there is a guy suggesting he has a spreadsheet with breakdowns by packages and colors. Hoping to also find some data on how many of those are still on the road to really determine how rare my new purchase is going to be.

----

Here’s some analysis:
2005 (8,514 cars produced)
US
Aero 5MT 1,937 24.71%
Aero 4EAT 1,353 17.26%
Linear 5MT 1,911 24.38%
Linear 4EAT 2,638 33.65%
7,839 100%

2005
Canada (est.)
Aero 5MT 167 24.74%
Aero 4EAT 117 17.33%
Linear 5MT 163 24.15%
Linear 4EAT 227 33.63%
675 100%

2006 (1,832 cars produced)
US
Aero 5MT 235 16.17%
Aero 4EAT 103 7.09%
Linear 5MT 469 32.28%
Linear 4EAT 646 44.46%
1453 100%

2006
Canada (est.)
Linear 5MT 183 48.28%
Linear 4EAT 196 51.72%
379 100%

So of the total Aero models produced between 2005 and 2006 in the US and Canada, my car is 1 out of 3912. Thats not all that rare but certainly more so than my Miata! But when you go deeper, its 1 out of 2339 manuals produced. For US only manuals, its 1 out of 2172. Then since its a 2006, its only 1 out of 235 manual Aeros in the US! That is actually rare.

Like I had said, I want to find out how many black 2006 manual aeros there are with the winter package in the US that are still on the road. That number should be well below 100! I think there are more than 100 blue LS package Miatas in just the Northeast alone lol.

How did it go? I havent really any idea what to expect, other than it just seems like a fun car to me. I just need something relatively reliable and lower mileage to commute with. But having it be fun and fast was an important shopping factor. Then I will also be taking it to ski mountains all winter so being a wagon and having AWD and heated seats and a sunroof are super bonuses.

I will still probably autocross it at some point for shits and giggles but mostly it will just see daily driving and some road trips. Hoping to avoid the infamous head gasket issues for as long as possible! The turbos are far less affected at least.

I can’t find definite numbers for 2010, but in 2009 there were just over 1000 V8 Colorados built. Rough percentages seem to indicate a similar number for 2010. Of that, Z71's are probably the most common... I don’t have that package.

I’ve probably got 1 of 4-500 at most. Of course, there’s going to be a similar # of Canyons too, but still...

First of all, that’s awesome that you are getting that car, I am sure you will love it for getting yourself up into the mountains to ski.

You could be like the crazy Corvette guys and really go down the rabbit hole with this one. My manual 325xi wagon is pretty rare when you whittle it down, too.

Pretty good! I always liked the WRX wagon, but never thought it was particularly attractive inside or out. The 9-2X solves both of those with a great looking front end style and an uprated interior using much better materials. It’s a great compromise between comfort and fun.

I autocrossed mine a few times, it wasn’t record breaking, but it was adequate to have a lot of fun. My dad went with me during an event where it was absolutely pouring and he left a bit wide-eyed. The Saabaru handled it well.

Well yeah from the Colorado vs Canyon perspective, then I would have to include ‘06 WRX as well, which would of course balloon the number to something not rare lol.

https://www.esaabparts.com/saab/production/data/9-2x_2005_2006.php

According to this there were 115 black manual Aeros produced in 06. The rarest 9-2x would be an red 06 Aero with an auto at only 17 produced.

Yup, exactly my thoughts. Plus I get to avoid some of the subaru BROOOOO culture but yet its still the same car performance-wise.

Obviously my Miata makes a better motorsports vehicle, especially since its of no monetary value so I dont have to worry about breaking it. I am just happy that the two vehicles are significantly different enough. One of my plans was to pick up either another Miata or get an FRS as my second vehicle lol.

Yeah, I think its mostly interesting to me just because of how much polar opposite my Miata is. I am curious to look up those numbers just because of how laughable the difference is. In the US, there were 1458 Miatas produced in my color in 2001 (of 18147 total 2001 Miatas)!

Dunno. Saab changes usually were more than skin deep, you should be safe. Right?

Well yeah from what I understand the changes are the front of the car exterior as well as the interior were the main changes. And then some of the suspension parts were taken from the Sti and tuned differently. Otherwise it is a Subaru WRX.

Oh wow thats a lot of black ones haha! I did see that black was the most common. I reeeeeeally wanted a red one but no wonder they are even harder to find. I could care less what color it is as long as its not silver though. This car was too clean to care what color anyways!

Indeed. Our cars are two rare ones, sort of: the manual wagon and my wife has a manual X3... then you’ve got our black 2012 Volvo XC70. I see two or three every day, wherever I go around here.

I belong to a boat forum where a guy had a particular model made by a relatively small company... he searched for it for years, and finally found one. Production numbers range from maybe 9 to 15 total ever made. He lost it in a fire last year. Now he’s located another one but says, “geez I think they’re gonna want too much money for it” I mean come on it’s one of NINE maybe ever made!

On the other hand, im sure theres some special edition PT cruiser out there that only “a handful” were made in that exact configuration. So rarity only matters so much haha. It makes me wonder if its more of a curse than a blessing though since it just means some part will be harder to find. At least mine the mechanicals are not rare at all so that part will be easy.

I’ve always wondered, how much of those is actually Saab? I’d imagine if you go to NAPA for a ball joint, you just say “WRX” right? Or is the suspension something Saab messed with too? Certainly engine stuff is all Subaru.

And that’s kind of exactly what I hear about the Corvette guys, how they get all fired up about being one of... something extremely specific. Yeah, and mine’s the only one like it made on a Tuesday during a leap year with a full moon coinciding with the Perseid meteor shower...

Like you said - I like data. It’s fun to know random stats sometimes!

I have to look into it further, since I know some of the suspension stuff is tuned by Saab. But yeah all of the engine parts are a WRX. So I will probably have to check both cars at the parts counter since sometimes autozone/advance are stupid and cant figure that out.

This is one of my favorite games, because I used to have a 1989 boat with a ford-based engine from 1998-ish boat, and many of the parts (cap, rotor, plugs, wires, oil filter, etc) were no different from the automotive versions. But “what kind of car do you have?” Well... let’s call it a 1996 F-250. Ok, Extended cab, regular cab, crew cab, 4wd? LOL
