Perhaps, but often times it seems the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Some businesses are so non-confrontational internally that the aforementioned people can thrive, or at the very least somehow never ever ever get fired.

I get what he’s saying, but on the other end of the spectrum, you get very personable people who are totally fucking useless in a work environment. This people are especially prevalent in sales. Tons of people skills, but complete morons in all other respects.

Just going off of two managers I had working at two different minimum wage jobs: one acted like everything was on fire all the time, everything was a problem, everything was a burden, most of her employees couldn’t be trusted to do their jobs right, explained things like the employees were idiots, et cetera. The other was more down to earth, knew that when problems arose could be fixed, would discuss what needed to be done and made sure everyone was on the same page, and believed his employees could get their work done right even without him there. Guess which manager was more respected by their employees, and which job had a more positive work environment?

Depends on the industry. Some sales jobs require more functional knowledge than others. I come from the printing industry where personable but moronic sales people can really fuck you over.

He had me until “we’re an HR driven workplace”. HR is a foundation, but it doesn’t drive the business. Perhaps it was the implementation, but the two places I worked at with that mentality were the most F-d up places I’ve ever been. They don’t exist anymore.

as a person (who started in technical sales) from printing/light manufacturing ops and product development who had do CONSTANTLY deal with the customer telling me “...but sales said it was no problemmmm” and quit at least partly as a result of that: AMEN.

This exactly describes my current employer. Management straight up refuses to confront underperforming or non-performing employees and just hopes the situation will correct itself. The only employees that have been fired are because either 1) another employee threatened to sue the company for sexual harassment or 2) the employee started a fistfight with another employee.

If you show up, don’t call someone a c***, and don’t punch anyone, you could very well be employeed here the rest of your life, getting the same measley annual raise as every other non-management employee, regardless of your performance.

Depending on the scope of the job, the good workers have to pick up all the slack, and then they become bitter and morale dips or the good ones quit.

Definitely depends on the type of sales job. If you’re pushing mattresses, a personality is all that’s needed. But if you’re in a technical field, and will need to scope a job to figure out how much to charge, I really need someone smart. At my company we’re routinely brought in to scope the jobs, because the sales people barely understand what we do.

I consider a certain level of technical understanding to be part of the job description. When salespeople don’t have working product knowledge they’re not doing their jobs. I feel like Vayner’s point is more about interaction among peers. Imagine the top guy literally coming in and shitting on his coworkers every second of every day. That’s what he’s trying to avoid.
