"We used a digital tach because analog wasn't fast enough"

Ever thought about this? I have. It’s not true.

Kinja'd!!!

They’ve made an engine that can rev to the absurd redline in 0.6 of a second. They’ve got 10 pistons jumping up and down hundreds of times a minute. And their engineers are unable to make a little plastic/glass/unobtanium needle move 20cm within 0.6 of a second? As if that’s the biggest engineering challenge on the car.

I suspect the truth is somewhere in the middle . The standard tachometer hardware on every other Lexus/Toyota wasn’t able to keep up, they couldn’t be bothered improving or re-engineering it. The digital tach was Lexus cheaping out - on a crazy-overpriced car no less. It was also probably the smart move, so good on them, but the implication that it revs impossibly fast? Rubbish.

These are the things I dwell on

Hmm, that is a very very good point.

My guess isn’t that it was because a normal needle couldn’t keep up with the speed, but for long term reliability. There may not be a large amount of force needed to move a needle back and forth, but having it constantly move back and forth may have caused the mechanism to fail over time, and with the speed that the car revs the lifespan may be much shorter than the tach in a lesser car.

From what I’ve seen of the LFA’s tach, it’s capable of capturing minute variances in revs that analog gauges just can’t capture. I think that was their original intent, and journalists skewed that message a bit.

It’s bullshit. Galvanometers are fast as hell and have 1 moving part. They wanted to make a fancy LCD readout.

Also totally bullshit. They just wanted a digital instrument cluster because they wanted a neat customizable multifunction display.

Because they gave a bullshit answer instead of the truth to make themselves seem better than they are? After all, it’s not even a Lexus engine, it’s a Yamaha.

it’s a Yamaha.

Guess who controls Yamaha bruh.

It’s a Yamaha/Toyota engine with Toyota block codes. Yamaha Motors co-developed it with Toyota and Yamaha Music tuned the exhaust. I guess it’s more of a glorified pipe organ then...

Do you know who controls Yamaha? Can you say with certainty what percent of Yamaha stock is owned by Toyota? Do you know how much Toyota stock is owned by Yamaha? Last I checked they each bought a stake in each other.

I think it’s more than just that though. I think what they really wanted was a catchy line that gets repeated so many times at car shows that the line between truth and myth gets blurred. It’s right up there with “they had to stop selling them because they could outrun cop cars!”

You’re 100% correct that this wasn’t the reason, but it was most likely entirely up to the marketing group. Let’s just say that having worked for an OEM, I’ve seen plenty of evidence they tell you what you said when it comes to marketing materials.

my old ES250 I used to have did that shaky thing with the needle too, but it was an analog tach

So maybe the LFA is just a throwback to the original ES250 :p

Now i just wanna list Yamaha engines.

Definitely had a yamaha logo on my 3SGTE in my old celica

Also on 2JZs

2ZZGE was a yamaha engine i believe

Whatever V12 is in the OX99-11 obviously....

Anything else other than 2 generations of SHO engine and an LFA?

That’s a fantastic argument. This sort of revving is common place on motorbikes - do they all have tachs that can’t keep up?

I think it might have been the journos too. Maybe some engineer made a throw away comment about how their analog gauges were too slow at the time and it became myth

10/24/2017 at 22:32, STARS: 0

I’m sure they could make one that lasts though. If a Camry can do half a million kays, surely. And if the pistons are doing it, surely .

But maybe their existing hardware couldn’t take it

It’s true, but I can see the argument that that doesn’t fly in a car so technically savvy. That’s the sort of thing you expect from a hand-built English car.
