Finally stuck my modem/router to the ceiling - everything in the apartment is now wireless (TIVO, computer, PS3). This, in fact, works better now than when it was behind the TV. Will get a white adaptor and route it to make it look pretty. And I can rip about 10 feet of coax out of the living room now. Any suggestions from those of you who are smarter than me?

Can’t you just hide the whole thing in the light fixture. Get a short coax cable.

Like that the only thing you will see is the coax.

Yes. Ditch the router and get a 10 gigabit Ethernet switch

One of these adhesive wire covers would give it a nice finished look.

Wire anything that you want to have low latency and higher throughput. I bet you’re fighting over time slots with many others around you.

You’ll see a couple inches of coax - and it won’t fit in the fixture, and it wouldn’t likely work well through glass. The test will be how long it take SigOther to notice I’ve done it. Always good fun.

Got this router/modem maybe 4 months ago ... and I should replace it? With what, and why?

I have no idea how to do that - anything I can watch somewhere?

Will watch later - is this something that potentially doesn’t take up too much room?

Empty space is a waste. Server racks are an investment

They have you confused. The best way to get high speeds is to use Ethernet cable from the router to the device (you Xbox, tv, computer, etc.). In big buildings, all of the routers are fighting for airtime with each other and other devices like TVs and phones. The slowdown you see when your neighbors are home is probably because of the shared wireless bandwidth, not the cable.

Other wireless routers improve speeds with multi-in-multi-out (MIMO) tech or by switching from 2.4ghz to 5.2ghz where there is less interference.

Either way, a wired connection will give you the best possible speed.

1) Grab ethernet cable

2) insert one end into PC

3) insert other end into router

4) BAM! Faster internet.
