Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Older IS250. 2008. has 150K km on it. Was my dads car. he is getting a GLK 250 Diesel. this one falls to me.

Not sure what I want to do with it. car is pretty rough cosmetically, paint has a bunch of scratches and the door was poorly repainted from a get together with a silveraro.

3 ideas:

1: just drive it. Ithas 150K km on it. treat it like a beater. regular maintenance and so on.

2: do a mild restore/ clean.
-Polish out the paint as best I can
-Fix any mechanical issues (I think the transfer case needs a seal and it could probably stand an alignment)
-New summer wheels
-Window tint
-Replace the one headlight thats gotten really badly discolored.

3: do something REALLY stupid with it. dad ran the idea of lifting it up 2 or 3 inchs and putting some mud tires and a bull bar on it. paint the car camo colors. that sort of stuff. buuttt this is very costly and frankly, id rather spend the money on motorcycles. not to mention, aftermarket for this car is....slim.

what does oppo think? I’m not selling the car because its been through 2 accidents and frankly, isnt worth that much on the market. And for what i need the car for (winter commuter & VERY occasional road trips. It would probably sit for 5 months of the year while I’m on the bike), i think its more then up to the task.

What would oppo do?

Please tell me more about the silveraro. Is it a Fiero with 4WD and a bed, or a Silverado with a bed-mounted V6?

#2, duh.

It’s a free toyota. You have been given a set of wheels that will be reliable for the next 15-20 years with just consistent, easy maintenance. Buff it up, go through it a few times, take care of it, and it will take care of you.

Alternatively - use it to tow your track bike and paint it up to match the fairings or helmet you use.

I say #2, if you mean tires and not wheels. Also, you may be able to clear that headlight without replacing it. Big difference in cost. Post pics when you get a chance, if you don’t mind.

I’d go with #2. I’m too boring to go with #3. #2 is pretty much my standard even with beaters.

I do want a different set of wheels for it. the summer that it has are....well, shit. really really heavy POS. I think they are Akita AK77s that are curb rashed to shit. also 17s. I kinda want 18s on it.

As part of a mild restoration, I’d debadge it then rebadge it with Toyota & Camry labels...and drive the hell out of it over the winters to come

I would do some combination of 1 and 2. Regular maintenance and minor cosmetic work as time and money allow.

Basic maintenance and drive it. Sure it’s a Lexus, but at this point that car is just a beater with an expensive badge on it.

Save your money for something you enjoy spending it on.

-I work for a Lexus dealer. I hate that generation IS, and treat it just as badly if given one myself.

Maintain it get another 150K kM out of it. Save money for fun projects/next vehicle.

Seriously, for those of us that use dumb units, 93K miles is just getting broken in. It’s not a beater until you get twice that many miles on it.

Dude what. It’s a 2008 Lexus. Clean it up, treat it well. That’s a hell of a nice daily driver. 150k km is, what, 93k miles? Shit, son, I consider that low-mileage.

I’d say 1 or 2 depending on the estimated total value and how bad it is cosmetically and what it would take to repair.

to put in my 2 cents on it...
the 250 is a great car...but its slow and not very ‘enthusiast. its comfy, quiet, great for road trips and its elegant...

but holy shit does it scream middle aged house wife. also, 3600lbs hooked up to a 2.5V6 @206HP, AWD and a slushbox doth not a fast car make.

Something between 1 and 2. A 9 year-old Lexus with less than 100K miles on it is not a cheap beater that should be carelessly abused, even if it may be a little rough cosmetically. However, it’s nothing special either, so there’s no point in making a huge investment in it. Take the middle ground, treat it well, and drive it for another 100-200K miles.

Answer 2.

Lexii are good reliable things. No reason to thrash it. Fix the mechanical issues, restore the looks a bit and you would have a classy ride for several years.

the car is worth about 9-11k in good condition. as it sits, maybe 6-7? 3k down due to rough paint and 3 accidents in its past. for a full detail to clean up the headlight and scratches it would be 1000? but it would help me convince myself that I’m actually taking care of it right.

As others have already said, it is slow. Very, very slow. Which isn’t a problem in and of itself, but when combined with the fact that they moved the pedals too far to the left to make enough room for the AWD transfer box which leads, to in my case at least, a sore right hip for a full week after driving one to Chicago for work. The overall quality of that generation is also quite poor, especially for a Lexus. The materials do not wear well over time. The plastics are hard and noisy. The ICE was hopelessly outdated when the put it in the car when new. They require premium gas, but are really incredibly poor on fuel economy, especially around town. The seats are too high, so I spent the drives to and from Chicago with my legs canted left and my torso tilted right, while also leaning back further than I wanted just to avoid hitting the roof; hence the sore hip. (I am 6-foot and 220 pounds. I know I need to lose a few, but otherwise I am averagely proportioned, with about equal leg and torso length. I absolutely cannot find a comfortable driving position in those cars.)

If you’re interested, go drive one. Preferably a long drive if you can; like over an hour straight behind the wheel. If you like them, that’s fine. It’s your money, won’t bother me at all if you get a car you like. But I detest those cars because they are just horrid.
