There are these CRAPPY pencils that are wrapped in a decorative plastic layer and made of some miserable non-cedar wood and they shred and tangle up the works. Disassemble, clean, reassemble.

Back when I was in school, you had to sharpen your own damn pencil. By hand. Uphill too. And in the snow.

And that lovely surface layer leaves curly-qs on the edge when you’ve finally managed to get a nice point. What is this world coming to!?

... with a hand crank model mounted to the wall. None of this child-coddling electric sharpener stuff! ::hitches up pants::

And I bet you had to carve them out yourself. You didn’t have a fancy slate cutting machine, did you?

My slate was provided to me. I had to work in the mine that provided the chalk, plus, I was required to shovel the coal into the stove because I was always the first one done with my work. But my father would hook up the sleigh when it snowed, and that was fun, but the long black woolen underwear, while warm, was itchy.

I’m sure you’re a better man for it.

Except for mining the chalk, that was my grandmother’s narrative.

As long as it’s cedar, it’s good.

Black Warriors are great, but I the classic prefer Dixon Ticonderoga.

I went all out and bought a $165 pencil annihilator. In manages to chew threw that crap good and propa. Having control of my own supply budget makes things nice.
