Kinja'd!!!

Well, after months of talking about it, my mother in law finally pulled the trigger. Replacing her ‘15 LS 460 with a P100D. Unfortunately she’ll still have her VW Denim Edition Bug as a second car but there’s time to talk her into replacing that - it’s still relatively new. She’s picking it up early next week. It’s arrived at the dealership and ready to be picked up but she’s going out of town. I told her I’d happily go pick it up and make sure it’s up to par for her, she laughed and said no. Either way I will get behind the wheel and I can’t wait - I don’t think she’s aware of how quick it actually is, but I’ll make sure she finds out...safely... :) :)

All I know about it is P100D, Pearl White.

Model S is a phenomenal device! Great purchase for her and I hope she loves that Ploodhound.

I have a feeling she will, I know I will.

Congrats to her on the purchase.

Did she cross shop with anything else before she bought it? A coworker regretted not cross shopping before she bought her P85D. She ultimately ended up trading it in on an RS7.

There’s basically nothing that truly competes with the Model S right now. The closest thing is the Bolt, which is an economy car with a pretty good range.

I’d love to get a more practical/cheaper electric car with similar range to a Model S (that isn’t an econobox like the Bolt), but they simply aren’t available.

I hope that’s not the case, but anything is possible.

Trying to decide if it was a typo for LX470 or LS 460. Thanks Lexus for making your product names very different and not at all hard to differentiate.

If it were a more adventurous person it could’ve been a Frankenstein LS/X 460/70 debacle. Though I’m not sure how that’d work.

Triple engine. LSX, 1UR, and 2UZ. In the same vehicle.

She was all about the electrical aspect but she couldn’t stomach the fit and finish issues that she encountered. She just liked to brag about the efficiency and performance.

That’s only if her primary desire is an electric vehicle. For the same money plenty of people cross shop all the typical luxury brands. Depending on how little/much the MIL drives it could definitely play a big factor in the decision making process (drive lots – maybe don’t want to deal with charging woes, or drive very little – who cares about bad gas mileage in that case!) – in addition to the level of plushness one desires (as opposed to minimalism) from a $100k+ vehicle.

It’s an absolutely amazing piece of machinery – but there are plenty of alternatives that continue to sell by the boatload, unless the buyer is specifically going for that cool factor currently associated with Tesla.

Have you considered getting a plug-in hybrid? I am still convinced that is the best recommendation for people who want to go electric - especially if it is their only vehicle.

The 530e can do 30 miles on electric only up to 87 mph and it isn’t terribly slow.

I seriously considered one but was disappointed with the power specs.

She drove the RS7 last year when she started thinking of replacing the LS. For whatever reason that wasn’t fully explained, she didn’t like it. Not sure she really looked at anything else other than another LS or going back to a BMW 7.

Strange how they both looked at the same two cars at some point. Maybe it’s the hatch back? Ha

Could very well be. Knowing my mother in law, my guess is that the RS7, to her, didn’t scream ‘luxury’ to passers-by the way the top of the line LS or BMW 7 did, or like the P100D will. Kinda silly if you ask me, but hey, whatever she wants.

Tesla Model Ss aren’t cool anymore and the Model X was never cool. The S hasn’t been for years. Only plebes think they have any “cool factor”. Their value is in their long range and general practicality (plus, they’re fast, which my wife has noticed and she envies it). You can charge one at home, drive it to work 50+ miles away (if that’s your situation), leave it parked off a charger, and drive home without worrying about your range.

Electric is not a panacea, it’s just optimal for a specific subset of uses of cars.

In case you hadn’t noticed, a majority of people are “plebes” - and there are plenty of people who buy Teslas with that being a determining factor. If you think that each and every newly minted tech bro who buys a Tesla is doing it purely and specifically as a result of some cost/benefit analysis of the virtues of electric propulsion (and it being a Tesla!!! has nothing to do with it), you paint these people in a much brighter light than I do.
