As said they do this for model homes, the garages are frequently used as sales centers and may not even have traditional garage doors (french doors in their place). They’ll remain that way until the neighborhood is sold out, at which point they’ll be converted into normal garages and a traditional driveway will be installed. They’ll then be sold like any other home in the subdivision.

A little preemptive on building for a world where everyone has an autonomous car pass, aren’t we? These are clearly junk storage spaces (as most people use garages for) that have rolling doors in case you want to use them as a shop.
Then again, I’ve never seen a modern garage with a flat concrete floor like the garages grandpa built in SoCal. Only one of the two was used for a car and a trailer (and a small shop space, plus both were deep enough to have a film developing room in the back), while the other was always used as a wood shop.

Ones I’ve been in have the garage converted to the sales office so they can use the rest of the house for show and tell, staging it as a house, etc.

One of the main reasons I bought a house from the 70’s in an area where most are 2000+ is the wide, deep, flat-floored garage. None of the newer construction has anything like it.

I wonder what started that trend. All garages I’ve seen built since sometime in the 1980s have had a sloping floor (presumably so water flows down and out, instead of having a drain inside, but all I’ve seen is the water collecting behind the door seal). It’s kind of terrible for practicality.
On the other hand, dealing with the abysmal construction of post-1960s and pre-2000s housing would be a difficult decision. Well, unless it was absolutely top-tier construction, of which there was little.

I just don’t understand the mentality that results in junk-filled garages rather than car-filled garages.
I already have too much crap in mine, but my wife and I are committed to keeping the garage as a place primarily for cars (and a chest freezer).

In Finland the purpose of a garage is to store a vehicle. Besides the vehicles you can also place there one set of tires and a moderate amount of tools. You are allowed to do minor fixes in the garage. Any other use of a garage would be illegal.
Needless to say that only very small amount of garage owners obey these rules and they are not even enforced. So most garages are full of crap.

You’d think that people would use them more for their intended purpose in Finland. Personally, I refuse to live somewhere without a garage where I live and it doesn’t even get that cold here. Keeping my car clean (no tree bits in my car), keeping it warm/dry, and being able to leave without defrosting/fogging is critical in an environment like mine.
