Parking brake headache

Hey all.

Over the weekend I was working on putting new rotors and pads on the vette. I’ve been having issues with parking brake shoes.

A) they are a bitch to install. Spring keeps jumping out and they don’t hold well.

B) Adjustment is a guesswork at best.

Parking shoes vary in configuration. There is the horseshoe design... and then they had a different version where the horseshoe is cut in half.

They are sort of similar to these. Instead of a retaining bracket, I have a spring that holds the shoes in place. The new set I put on is same as above, but cut in half and one half fits into the other to make install a bit easier.

Anyway. They are crap. Absolute garbage.

Is there an alternative to parking brake for C5 vettes? Something more heavy duty? Something that won’t disintegrate if you drive over 5mph with brakes on?

I had an 03 suburban that used very similar parking brake system and those fell apart if you went over 5mph with brakes on.

Do you have installation instructions?

1. Put it on brake pedal
2. Add weight as needed

alternatively, it works as a rev limiter by putting it under the gas pedal

Installation is simple: place it in the passenger footwell, glovebox, or somewhere else that allows for quick and easy deployment.

It operates slightly differently from the factory system. When parking, come to a stop; shut the engine off; place gearbox in neutral; release foot brake and determine the direction the car wishes to roll; reapply foot brake and put gearbox into gear; release footbrake, collect parking break from storage location, and exit vehicle; place parking break ahead of or behind tire so as to prevent movement as determined above.

Thank you, I was looking for something less mobile. You see, when I apply parking brake as per your instruction, a passerby could remove the parking brake and use it to unlock window and extract valuables.

Valuables vary depending on person.

If the spring isnt holding it, something isnt right.

Is the spring bent, are there sprigng clips to hold them on? I just did drum brakes last night, only thing I can say would be an issue is the adjuster might be out of place.

Spring is holding fine. I am saying brakes aren’t holding. Granted, I need to do adjusting a bit more but it’s a huge pain in the ass. I hate anything that begins with drum brakes.

My doors are never locked. Your problem didn’t occur to me.

I live in North East. Doors here are usually locked and sometimes bullet proof.
