I’m thinking drive Rusty around the block by Thanksgiving. I think it’s doable. The shifter works now; brakes are next, and if the bulk of the electrical system is intact, which it appears to be, I may even have brake lights. Who knows: a brief romp up the freeway?

You’ve commented a couple of times about how those vans are missing the bottom 12 inches due to rust in your neck of the woods. I can say with certainty that apart from that, mine is not the most robust vehicle I have ever seen.

That’s a good goal. I’m sure you can make that happen.

There’s really not much too those vans. They’re just a thin metal box. I learned quite recently that they’re unibody, which really shocking to me. It’s no surprise that they evaporated in the salt. I really don’t see many of that body style anymore. Even their replacements are becoming a common rusty sight. Although not as bad as the old ones were in their day.

Oppo reminds me of how gross rust is and how lucky I am to be living out west, at least from a rusty car point of view. So destructive, rust.

I lived in Germany for the last four years of the 80s and all of the cars were unibody and you had to weld the rust holes. You could buy a rocker panel and weld it right over top of the existing and then it would pass inspection. There was a rigorous national inspection that cars had to pass, but the junkers that the Army guys drove got it much easier.

Hides the rust, maybe buys you a year or two. I’d imagine the original cancer continues to grow behind the new panel, which is probably made of pot metal to begin with.
