Kinja'd!!!

Broken bolt in the block. The other three will hold it on tight enough... right?

Looks broken off, not stripped?

How is access to this area, can you get a drill to it with some left-hand bits?

Sheared, whatever. Not enough space for a drill. I don’t have one anyways. Nor do I have extractor bits.

Water pump?

What is this part (can’t really tell from the pictures) - will the other three actually hold it? Have the other three been verified to actually come out and not break off, too?

Kinja'd!!!

Thermostat housing. The bolt actually broke when I was putting the new one on. The others tightened up fine. The one that’s broken is the bottom right one in this photo. (Or top right depending on how kinja feels like rotating this image)

o-ring or gasket seal? You might get lucky since it does look like it’s sort of in between two other bolts, but I’d keep a close eye on it for leaks.

Sorry to say, but I wouldn’t trust it. Couple of heat cycles and it might warp and leak. Might be good enough to drive it to a shop to have them extract it for you if you can’t get it yourself.

Gasket.

Yeah, that’s what I thought. It’s just for a day or two until I can get someone with a bolt extractor set to help me.

Did you happen to put a touch of RTV on it? If it’s a dry paper gasket I’m giving it like 20% chance to not leak once hot/pressurized.

It’s actually kind of a hybrid berween a gasket & an o-ring:

Oh, that’s good news then. I’ll move your odds up to 51% chance of not-leaking.

As someone else has said though, the plastic housing could warp. My commute is short and doesn’t create much engine load however.

Yeah, it’s not a great idea to leave it like that, but if it’s your only car you should be able to get to work/a shop if you take it easy.

I broke a thermostat bolt on my 85 Jaguar Saturday. Only 3 bolts on that one, I don’t think it’ll work with 2. At least there’s a decent stub to grab.

Is that an aluminum block? If so, you might find this trick useful:
