In order to facilitate replacing the t-stat I have to go pick up some stuff... but then the engine is too hot to work on. By the time I can safely drain the coolant, there’s not enough daylight left to finish. My next day when I have time to do the job isn’t for two weeks. I’ll need the heat working before then -_-

The only solution - buy a cheap scooter off Craiglist.

That would be the perfect solution if I had a death wish.

This is basically my set up. 125cc bike for the win.

Do you have a car charger? If so there is an easy fix for this. Hook up the charger/battery tender, put the key in the on position, and jump the plug for the temp sensor on the side of the radiator. This will cause the aux fan on your radiator to turn on. Give that about 30 minutes and your coolant will be cool enough to drain. I’m at work right now, so I don’t have access to the wiring diagrams, but there are several videos on the internet on how to do this.

It looks like the m52 has even less room for working than the m62.

I would really love a 150cc scooter at some point to go along with my Accent and the 126 I intend to get sometime in the semi-near future...4-cyl, 2-cyl, 1-cyl! I would just need something electric for 0-cyl and I’d be all set! :P

You want to go DOWN in cylinder count as a petrolhead...right? Am I doing it right?

Take a cab/Lyft/Uber to the parts store, or bug a friend for a ride.

I don’t have a charger, just one of those little jump start battery bricks.

There is literally one uber driver in town, and none of my friends drive... it’s a downside of living on an island with a good bus system (that doesn’t actually go near my house).

An Uber or taxi would be prohibitively expensive anyways. My tools are in my mom’s car the next town over, and I have to get ramps and a drain pan from a truck the next town over in the opposite direction.

It’s just wide at the top because it’s canted. Once you get the radiator shroud and airbox out of the way (just a few screws/clips each) there’s a healthy amount of space.

Well, if you trust that to get the car started, you could just leave the fan on while letting the battery drain and use the jump pack to get the car started after you are done. A box fan aimed into the radiator can also speed up the cooling process, but it takes longer to get it cool with just a box fan.

I gotta drain the block too, not just the rad. I think it’ll help if I turn on the aux heater as well, that will keep coolant circulating with the engine off. http://oppositelock.kinja.com/rest-button-is-best-button-1733211556

that’ll help too. Assuming you are replacing the thermostat because its stuck, and that it’s stuck open, natural convection will actually do a lot to cool the coolant in the block off as well. I’ve done this a few times on my e36 & e46 and it dramatically cuts down the time spent waiting for the car to cool down.

It is stuck open. The heat will eventually come on on a longer drive, but my drive to work is short, slow, and mostly downhill. I end up practically idling the whole way with no engine load, so the coolant never gets warm enough by the time I get there. Also I’m doing this at 6am so it’s quite chilly out.

I know those feels. I had my thermostat break open when I lived 1 mile from work. Usually(thanks to traffic) the car would start spitting out heat about halfway there, but with the t-stat stuck it literally never got warm. Thankfully I have heated seats, so I was able to use that to stay warm until I got it fixed, but it was really bad for a while.

the m5x engines actually have tons of space to work on, it’s just the shroud that makes it look like there isn’t any. Pull off the shroud and radiator fan and you have 5-6+” of space between the belts and the radiator.

Ha I was trying to replace the thermostat in my Jaguar (1985 XJ6) when I snapped off one of the bolts. Worse, it was parked blocking the Triumph on probably the last really nice convertible day when I was going to drive it.
