I’m not just all about cars, driving truck and writing about stupid things I do. I also love watches of all kinds.
Recently I moved on from my Apple Watch Series 2 and decided to go back to a traditional watch. I’ve always been a dive watch enthusiast, and been wanting to get a more “robust” model. Right now I’m wearing an Invicta Pro Diver chronograph I got for testing because I was part of Amazon Vine. Great watch for under 120$ for sure.
However, I just impulse purchased something I’m super excited to get. Kind of a “treat yourself” moment.
My father has always raved about Deep Blue watches, and he should know a thing or two about dive watches from his old line of work.
So I pulled the trigger on a Master 1000, and the orange was too cool, so my inner me just couldn’t say no.

I bought myself a nice watch when I graduated high school, but shattered the face on it. Suffice to say, I don’t wear mine often. The one on the left was a gift from my dad, the one on the right I bought as a casual watch.

The Citizen is an Ecodrive model or whatever. So if the battery dies, you just leave it in the sun for about half an hour, and away you go.

I have a couple of fancy shmanzy watches.
The daily is a Tudor Heritage Chrono (this also has a cloth NATO band which I don’t use):
The weekend watch (and maybe international travel) is an IWC Ingenieur AMG Chrono:
These weren’t cheap, but I didn’t buy them new. I’ve found that most higher end watches depreciate quite steeply. I had admired both for a while, then started stalking the secondary market until I found good deals. With a little patience, I think I bought both at what might be their depreciation floor - I think I could sell them and not incur a loss. I find the IWC keeps better time and is a lot lighter (titanium), and the Tudor gets a lot more attention.
For years, I wore an early 70s vintage Timex Dynabeat that I found for under a dollar at an estate sale. It kept good time, but ate batteries as is probably typical for the early high speed pre-quarts movements. It often got comments and compliments for its vintage style, it was nice looking. However, it eventually died, and I wanted something premium and maybe a little frivolous. I have always admired fancier watches, but don’t want something in gold with diamonds etc. I was able to work these purchases into the budget.
I’d like more, but am not willing to spend more. I like some of the German (Tutima) Flieger style chronos, especially with a power reserve indicator. I also have an odd fixation on the Corum $20 gold piece watches, but I would want an automatic model with a gold band - insanely expensive.

Duuuuuuude I love them both, but that Tudor though. Oh wow. I’m honestly speechless.
I used to own a Submariner, and I regret getting rid of it. I strive to own a two tone blue/24K model submariner. That or an Omega Seamaster. You sir, you have elegant taste.

I like some Rolex styles, but I would be a little annoyed if it got too much attention, or if everyone thought it was fake. The Tudor via genetics seems to have 90% of the style at a fraction of the price.
If you buy at the right time, I think many of these can be a fun toy to enjoy and then part with if you want, and not lose anything.

I love watches. Sadly I’m a big fan of crazy expensive ones, so I force myself to not spend money on them haha. I have an old Patek that’s been passed down my family that I wear to big occasions, it’s my favorite.
I’d love to get a hublot one day.

Believe it or not the Rolex didn’t get too much attention, back then I was in insurance sales and the people I’d “want to notice” did, but often people would almost sarcastically ask if it was real. So that was slightly annoying.
Only a connoisseur would know the Tudor, Omegas, Breitlings and such. That’s a nice thing to have.

I’ve got a Seiko automatic - I forget exactly which model. I’be had it roughly 7-8 years. It’s been alright, but if I were to do it again, I’d go quartz, possibly solar. I do have a soft spot for the Seiko orange monster though.

I am sure in outside sales positions, a Rolex could be good or bad. I work in an office, all internal, and few notice the Tudor, but strangers have commented on it. The IWC, being an AMG special edition, has only been noticed by another AMG owner at a MB club event (I had an AMG car when I bought the watch).
I like having something a little unique rather than the standard Rolex. Not that many of them aren’t cool, but I think you understand that appeal.

I used to want a square TAG-Heuer ever since I saw McQueen wear one, but in a way I’ve recently found watches to be excessive. I mean, we all carry pocket watches 24/7 (phones) and I really found my concept justified when a co-worker saw my then current watch, Target’s finest $19.95 Coleman brand silver face, and asked from ten feet away, “Wow, hey, is that a Breitling?”
I showed him this “Brietling”
Admittedly, the color combinations are quite nice and from ten feet away, worn by a short sleeved pilot in a jet bridge during a daytime plane swap, it probably looked nice from a bit of distance. But a Breitling? Well, if this can fool some then so be it, and that’s when I began my turn to the cheaper side.
It was purely for uniform regulation compliance because the movement in my Tissot-PRS200 quit on me. That one was a Christmas present from my dad a couple years before; right before larger watch faces became popular and making it almost look like a smaller women’s watch today. It’s nice. It’s showing abrasions around the bezel from general use in non boardroom environments.
It still sits in my dresser drawer in it’s original blue box since it quit about ten years ago while I continue to wear cheaper watches for the same uniform problems. So I’m not really sure anymore why I need a fantastic and fancy watch when my current $50 Indiglo Tmex (Or the $70 chronograph variant) looks pretty nice today.
Should I have to get a schmancy watch, what would it be? Well, I like the Omega Speedmaster X-33 series, or something along those lines but I’m overall way too pragmatic to believe I need to buy something like that if the equivalent cost would equal a set of three new Weber carbs. Should I fall to my pragmatism while buying a money accessory, it would need to have a fourth UTC hand, solar or perpetual movement, and atomic time keeping would be nice. That sort of thing. Right now that happens to be a Citizen Navihawk, or if I really fall of the wagon and think I could do without the atomic + solar stuff and must spend $6,200 more, a goddamn Brietling Navitimer GMT.

Thanks! My dad has always loved the DB line and finally talked me into one. He’s ironically had the same orange faced Pulsar he bought new back in the Navy exchange in like 1985. We love watches lol

Oh absolutely, couldn’t agree more. Rolex is so recognizable to anyone, the exclusivity is almost lessened because of that alone.
My dream watch is anything that features a tourbillon movement. So few people understand it, but I’m so in awe about the complexity and awesomeness of that movement. There’s just something I appreciate so much about a watch with a movement like that. I’ll take that over a Rolex any day.

This is a very well thought out post, I love it. So you’re a pilot? Way too cool, I’d considered that line of work a few years back, seems like a very cool job.
I like cheap watches too, shoot my brother has some very nice Casio G shocks, and you cannot possibly beat the value there. I’ve got a few Invicta watches that are inexpensive, but they look very nice.
On the comment about the Citizens Navhihawk, I had one of those a few years back. Absolutely LOVED that watch. Sold it to a friend and really regret it. I like a bigger faced watch and I’m a sucker for complications. On a dive watch I like a clean appearance, but the aviation watches will always be very special to me.
Don’t get me started on the Breitling. When my bought my Submariner years back I really wanted to get a Breitling and talked myself out of it. Regrets lol

I admire the complicated movements too. I really have a thing for repeater movements, but those tend to be quite expensive even in pocket watches. Annual and perpetual calendars also impress me.
