Hi already angry fellow Oppos. I want to tell you that I want to ban trucks.

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve been contemplating this for a while and I think it’s time we ban trucks for normal people to buy, use and drive. This will come into effect when I become supreme ruler.

I will make the following exceptions:

1) If you already own a truck: I don’t want to confiscate anyone’s wheels.

2) If you own a truck older than 25 years: I’m biased, because I do (see below). Also, “classics” are exempt from my law.

3) If you have a commercial drivers licence

4) If you pass a “truck test” during your licensing/driving tests and get endorsed to operate a truck.

Kinja'd!!!

The reasons I want to do this are as follows:

1) Bad for the environment - trucks, on average burn more gas than other classes of vehicle

2) They are huge. You don’t need a truck to commute from your McMansion to your job as an accountant in the city.

3) Truck bros, they will have to jump through extra hoops

4) Safety: trucks are not the safest class of vehicle.

5) Just as a fun fact, where I live, Pickups are classed as commercial vehicles, without exception. You don’t have to get a different licence or extra training, but they are insured differently. Not sure how this applies to utes. It’s never come up.

Anyway... Discuss: Tell me how dumb/smart I am and why you do or don’t support this idea.

I would like to extend that to crossovers. Because by EPA standards, they are all trucks too.

I’d support that. But, the CX-3 is a “crossover” and is quite small. We’d have to figure out a way to classify them.

Maybe curb weight?

You could make just as legitimate of a list for reasons to ban performance cars for non racing drivers.

Yeah, in my future kingdom, you can only ride a moped or drive a manual nissan micra without additional testing and paperwork.

Trax is on that particular list as well I highlighted. Personally I just want all pointless high-seating position pseudo-SUV-which-can’t -do what-it-looks-like-can-do things to be gone from this world, because low slung two seater sports car can’t see over them.

I think your real point is point 2 on your list: they’re all bought by people who don’t need them. Maybe just a written essay to submit for a license on why you need those gas guzzlers.

I’d fully support this. Just justify yourself. You don’t need to commute in an escalade or f150

Plot twist: If you ban trucks then your allotment of maple syrup will be reduced to 0.5 liters per year.

I can support a drive to make pickups smaller, but don’t just ban them completely.

1) Bad for the environment - trucks, on average burn more gas than other classes of vehicle

A 2.7L Ecoboost 2wd is rated at the same combined mileage as a 4cyl ecoboost AWD Explorer at 21mpg.

2) They are huge. You don’t need a truck to commute from your McMansion to your job as an accountant in the city.

How do you know they only use a truck to commute? How often do they need to use the hauling capabilities to deem it a “necessity”?

4) Safety: trucks are not the safest class of vehicle.

The F150 gets “Good” ratings on every test from the IIHS, the Explorer gets a “Marginal” in the small frontal overlap. Trucks are pretty darn safe, at least on par with other similarly sized vehicles.

If you want to ban pickup trucks, you needs some better reasons.

Not a terrible idea to require better training to drive a high performance car either (though really we should have better training and stronger licensing requirements all around).

I’m all for anything over 100hp requiring a stricter driving test.

Our driving lessons are too damn easy... driving is a privilege, not a right.

Just because you see only one person in it doesn’t mean that’s always the case. We have friends who are a family of six. The kids take the bus, so the daily use is one driver. But on weekends, their big-ass SUV is full.

I support this thoroughly because of exception #4. I like trucks, I daily a truck, but all too often I see people who can’t drive a truck worth a crap.

Dodge! (lol)

But don’t you think that most people in pickups should have additional testing or an endorsement on their license?

Pickups? No. At least, not half tons. They drive practically like cars. 1-tons we can negotiate. 3/4 tons I reserve the right not to have an opinion on.

If you want to know what I really think though, is the system is in gridlock. (The following will be from an Ontario perspective.) You can’t reasonably make testing more strict because the actual rules and advice they give are often BS. Couple examples:

- The speed limits are idiotic. A new driver can pass the test only because they aren’t super confident yet. An experienced driver... yeah. No. When I went for my full license, I was doing my best to stay under... took the slowest vehicle in the stable by a country mile... and if you have any concept of self preservation it simply can’t be done. Thankfully the examiner had the same opinion.

- The MTO’s instructions for what to do if you’re being tailgated are to brake sharply to tell the person they’re following too close. Not “Move over”, not “speed up”, not “speed up so you can move over” and not “ignore the idiot”. The instructions are literally to brake check the person behind you. Uh... nope. Again.

- Lane discipline is taught more as a suggestion than anything else.

It amounts to this. The driver of a truck has a little extra visibility. They get to see a little extra idiocy. They also can see a way around it. They take that way, because idiots are frustrating. This comes off as a defense, but I’m not trying for that—it’s just what I seem to notice as a pattern.

In other words, first clean up the shitshow in general. Better education, ADVICE THAT MAKES SENSE, review every single traffic bylaw/limit, then see what happens. You’ll probably find the issue goes away.

——————————————————————————-

Personally what I’d like to see as far as license requirements is similar to what is practiced in aviation. Type ratings. Before you’re allowed to drive a vehicle home, you must complete an all-weather course around a track in the exact model you plan to buy.

Also re the third last paragraph. I should be clear I was ignoring myself. You can never really trust your own opinion of your driving. I was basing it on what I see on the roads every day and what I see as a passenger in pickups. From inside, even as a passenger with someone I have no reason to stick up for, it feels perfectly reasonable... yet you know what it looks like from the outside.

For my part, even though my truck is actually fairly low, I can’t stand driving small cars now. It feels like I’m blind. It’s not all in the ride height, it’s also the seating position.

No need to ban the truck. Just ban the modification. No more than 2" lift, no more than 15 percent increase in tyre size and sidewall can not protrude past the bodywork.

Next, require a special licence and training for drivers of all vehicles with a GVM over 10,000 pounds. Further training and another licence category if one wants to drive a vehicle with a GVM greater than 20,000 pounds as well.

Works in Oz.

Not gonna happen, based on sales alone. Just this year, there have been over 2 Million new pickups sold in the US.

A modern pickup is no less efficient than an SUV, large sedan, or sports car. High teens / Low 20s MPGs when empty.

There are multiple consumer products that basically require a pickup - boats, RVs, horse trailers, snowmobiles, etc. Eliminating trucks would eliminate them, and take there jarrrrbs. Not gonna happen in the current political environment.

The current licensing tiers are good enough - You only need a CDL if over 26k lbs. Otherwise the biggest problem is parking space sizing.

The K10 was a great and solid car, I pretty much grew up with them around me. The K11 was an ugly car that was loved by the older generation. The K12 appealed more towards the younger female demographic for a first car while the males went for Vauxhall Corsas and Ford Fiestas. The K13 was neither here nor there but like the K11 seemed to appeal towards the older generation. The K14 they are trying to appeal to the younger generation as a whole using the style that is all to common these days. I happen to like the new Micra and think it’s by far the best looking so far.

I’m going to say no.

1) Meh. Emission controls are a thing. Increasing fuel costs will drive consumers away from trucks anyhow.

2) I won’t disagree with you. Most trucks are way bigger than most people need, to the point where using anything bigger than a half-ton to its capacity requires commercial-level driver’s licenses in most jurisdictions. I fully support said requirement. However I also will suggest that anyone commuting with a truck is more likely to migrate towards large SUV’s than anything else if you put roadblocks in the way of truck ownership, which are effectively no different than a pickup in almost every way except shape and intended use.

3) As above, truck bros will just become SUV bros if you prevent them from getting trucks. You’re not going to be able to cure the douches from their douchery.

4) Try to argue that to the occupants. They’re only less safe to whatever they hit.

5) No argument for no point. But I’ll point out there’s nothing stopping anyone properly licensed from dailying a big rig. If someone wants to drive a truck and can afford to do so, you won’t stop it. And placing hurdles on ownership just puts more stress on the people who do need them for work.

Nope. I own a powerstroke ford and will probably always. I used it today to haul stuff. Last week it pulled a 24ft trailer and picked up lots of wood. Also 4x4 here in MI when we get heavy snow is a life saver. Ive never gotten stuck and last year pulled 5 people at least out of ditches and snowbanks.

Go back to commie land this here is MURICA :)
