The want (not need) for a new DD is stronger than ever these days. My latest idea is to buy a CPO EB Mustang. I’ve had two as a rental cars and they actually get pretty decent mileage. The power is more than adequate for DD and cruising as well. 99% of the used cars are automatic but I think I’m ok with that. I’ve never bought an auto before, but I do like the idea for traffic. There are quite a few options under 20k that include the premium package. The 2018's are officially on sale with updated (worsened) styling and fancy new gizmos so I think values on the 2015-2017's will drop even quicker. I don’t need a super fun car for my DD, but it sure is nice on a bad day. Or sometimes on road trips, I’ll make a detour to hit a fun road. I think this would be a decent middle ground where the fun things are still kinda fun.

Pro/Con list below:

Pros: Styling, A/C seats, gas mileage, Automatic (traffic), 100k mi warranty, not relying on a 190k mi VAG product, fancy new (to me) features, safety improvements, easier maintenance, fun to drive.

Cons: Automatic (on back-roads), depreciation, higher insurance, still no room for boards/bikes/4 people, not a V8.

What do you think OPPO? Tell me why I’m wrong!

I’ll probably change my mind in a week, but that’s how life goes when you have ADD.

Automatic? I’m over it. Personally I think manuals are a must for a “toy” but for a DD I can deal. Sometimes I just want to get home at 3am, without braaaap.

These are good cars. If you are able to get over the livability (I’m sure you can get a bike rack or something) these actually do make a great everyday. Comfortable and powerful.

Only thing I would change to your search is to look for one with the Performance Pack. Different suspension, brakes, 3.55 ratio, Pirelli P Zeros, and a nifty boost gauge. I love mine, CPO that had 4k miles on it.

Also, you can take it snowboarding! I checked to make sure my board fits and you could only really bring one other person but, that’s fine.

I sit in stop and go traffic every day. I sorely miss the manual. If gave me something to do while just sitting there. The bike situation: get a trailer hitch ($100 +/-) and hitch mount (probably another $100), which I’d recommend anyway. It keeps the bikes off the roof/roof racks so you don’t have dirt and crap falling on your car and keeps the inside clean. It also is a great place for doing maintenance on the bike, lubing chains, fixing flats.

Owning an automatic always depresses me after a while. No matter how good the auto is, I start dreaming of how good it would be as a manual. Speaking for myself, I’d rather live with the annoyances of a manual than an automatic. (And you can get an EB with a manual!)

Otherwise, unless you regularly need to stop and haul large things or extra people in your daily driver, why worry about the extra room?

As for the V8, just go test drive an EB and see if you like it. You could always get the V8 too, but it might not be necessary if you like the EB.

That is a good point, about the bike maintenance. I never thought of that.

I’m not sure how I would feel about losing the manual. It’s a pain sometimes but a joy others. Nailing the perfect downshift right before the curve on my exit is one of my small joys in life, even in the diesel. I would still have a manual in my fun car so it’s not like I’ll be totally clutchless. This is something to consider though.

I’ve DD-ed manuals in NJ traffic for my 10+ year career, it’s not really a hardship. Moving on.

You can get bike on a Mustang. Get a SeaSucker. They’re fantastic. They have board rack options too.

Mustang EB is a great choice for a DD. I was considering one until i took a job where I wasn’t driving much (ever.)

I’m pretty used to only taking one person places. I’ve never owned a car with an adult sized backseat haha

I like the performance pack, but I just don’t think it is necessary for my DD. Plus it is harder to find and still carries a decent premium from what I can see. I am sure there are times I would be glad to have it, but I still have a fun car sitting in the garage. If I was dropping to one car, it would be mandatory.

Comfy and powerful without going broke is the name of the game. I will still have the manual car for fun times, too. And I agree, sometimes you just want a no drama experience from A-B with good music on the radio and your butt being cooled from the seat.

I’ve DD’d a manual in LA for the past 5 years. It’s not really that big of an issue. I’m just searching for justification to look at the cheaper automatic cars. All pricing being equal, I would buy a manual.

I’ll look into that, thanks!

They seem very well rounded and a decent bargain on the CPO market.

Be prepared to defend yourself against the constant “How com U dint get a Gee Tee?!”

Also, I have never found a manual to be inconvenient in traffic... if anything I prefer it, knowing I’m always in the right gear for what I want to do, whether that’s putting along slowly, or squirting into an opening in the lane that’s actually moving. It also staves off boredom, and the benefit of braking + engine braking comes in quite handy. Modern hydraulic clutches are so light that they never really fatigue your leg... My right leg gets tired of modulating the accelerator before my left leg gets tired of clutching.

I’ve driven both the GT and EB. I’ve only driven automatic ecoboosts though. I obviously like the GT, but from a practical daily standpoint, the EB is more than adequate. The auto is just thrown in there since they are much cheaper on the used market. I would still keep my fun car, which is a manual. I think that would help ease the burden of owning an auto haha

My Mustang is my everything car. Commuter (27 mpg), back roads, track, road tripper, just everything. So while I don’t need the PP it’s definitely nice to have when I do want to have some fun.

I’ll have to come up with a rant about the polar bears when someone asks “y no gt tho?” hahaha

I drive a manual in LA, and have for the past 5 years. It’s a non issue but I’m not going to pretend that at 6:30 pm, after a long day, it wouldn’t be easier to just get home, having an auto. The only reason I’m looking at autos is because they are cheaper on the used market and I wont have to worry about the previous owner doing clutch drops at every traffic light. I’m basically just looking for justifications to go the cheap route haha

I would say the PP is a requirement if it’s your only car.

But, if I start saying I need the PP, I’ll think I should just get the GT, but I would really prefer the GT premium, and if I’m getting a GTP I should have the PP too, but then, the GT350 sounds so much better, but for 60k, I can get all these other cars. Then, that somehow always ends up at me looking at RT/10 vipers and an SRT-10 Ram to pull it to the track. Or another Ferrari. My mind is an interesting place haha

I’ve driven 4 of the new generation so far. Three were rentals (2 EB and 1 GT) and I put a lot of miles on all of them. They seem perfect for grand touring and I don’t think they would be bad as a daily. All mustangs have a charm about them that has won me over. It’s also a car I’d have no problem driving to work. I never want to show up in a BMW/Porsche/Etc. I don’t want my shop staff to think they are working their ass off so the office staff can drive around in fancy cars. Even if I did buy a Maserati for the price of a Kia Soul. haha

Exactly. I’ve also have never owned a current generation car. That novelty certainly is having effect. But, I am still cheap frugal so looking at the CPO market is a good option. I also want something I can keep for 10 years and 100k miles. A 10 year old car isn’t really a great option for that.

As always, prospective purchases on Oppo are subject to harsh criticism... Once you purchase it, however, we will all celebrate with you!

Also, I can’t blame you because I bought the automatic Volvo because it’s impossible to find a manual V70, and I bought the auto Suburban because no such thing exists as a manual Suburban... BUT, my Jeep is manual... and broken. Very, very broken. :(

I had/still have (cause no one will buy it) a SeaSucker. Don’t get one. Yeah they work, but there is more risk in putting your bike on the roof. One day I was putting my bike on the sea sucker and the fork slipped out of my hand and hit the rubber of the suction cup. I’m really glad it only hit the rubber which prevented real damage, but I still have a tiny little dent up there. Another time one of the pedals rotated around and scraped the paint on my roof. And the SeaSucker popped my roof all the time going down the road. and it only holds one bike unless you get the one that holds two which is more money and inconvenient when you just want to use one bike.

I very quickly gave up and got a hitch and bike mount for the hitch. Way way way better.

Kinja'd!!! "SPAMBot - Horse Doctor" (spambot2002)
10/20/2017 at 14:12, STARS: 0

I hate any mount that is supposed to be temporary and/or universal. Hard mount designed for your specific application or GTFAC. Roof racks or a hitch is the way to go. There is even a SUP mount for crossbars designed for a Mustang. SUP on the roof, bike on the back (or roof), surfboard (or skis) in the trunk with the seats folded down, and I’d be ready for anything.

As for the auto, I have no idea if I’ll be bored with it in a month. That is the hardest part of this situation. At least I’ll be doubling (tripling from stock!) my HP. That certainly can’t hurt?

That was the plan with the VW. It will be 12 years old with close to 200K in the spring, so bushmissionaccomplished.jpg

I’ve pretty much looked at everything:

K900, Equis, 3/5/7 series, CTS/ATS V, SS, Corvette, Porsches, E550/63, F150, Flex, 4Runner, etc, etc, etc.

It would be great to keep it under 20k though.

TBH, I’m probably just going to keep driving the VW for a while. Everything mostly works and it has been a good car. Little things are frustrating but I think I’m in it for at least another year. I found a potential buyer for my Miata so I’m going through all of those emotions. The strongest is just wanting to sell everything (not the 348) and start fresh. That is where this search is coming from haha

There’s a huge jump between used GTPP and GT350 prices now though.

PP or not depends on how you’ll be as an owner. My EB didn’t have PP, and I constantly questioned that to myself. Sort of a “wish I had it so I didn’t think about it” situation. My GT has it, but the brembo brake upgrade pretty much justifies it to me.

I had a guy, but I got a GTPP for $25k with 32k miles on it. Just sayin’. Without a guy you can probably find a GTPP without insane miles for $30k or less.

The EB is great, the GT is better because V8, but if you’re concerned about MPG stick with the EB. I filled my GT up this morning and only got 14.9 MPG on this tank. My lifetime average in the GT (about 5000 miles now) is 16.5, my EB was in the 25ish MPG range over 22k miles.

I probably wouldn’t get a Maserati anyhow, but I would like to have a choice. That is the problem working with non-gearheads and people who only know of luxury brands from rap music. Doug had a good example of this when he went to a drive thru in a rented Maser QP. Everyone inside freaked out over what is a $25k car on a good day.

I’m not actually upset about it, I can honestly do what I want but I like to keep up appearances. It’s funny, I feel like most Angeleans are trying to look rich by leasing entry level luxury cars and I’m doing the opposite. I typically don’t care about what others think of me, but I do care about the health of my employment haha.

I really can’t afford the 350 right now, but that is always my thought process. My commute is short enough where terrible gas mileage wouldn’t kill me. It would just be an adjustment going from 38-42 MPG of cheaper diesel to 16 MPG.

If I get a GT, it will have to have the performance pack. The Brembos are definitely worth it. If I had a guy, it would be impossible to pass up that deal. An additional 5k would be worth it, without a doubt. the 10k up-charge though, is a hard sell. Especially for a car that would be worse (but more fun) for my situation.

I have a fun car I would would take to the canyons and whatnot so I really don’t think I would need PP. If I got an EB, it would only be a commuter car, in my mind.

Even without PP my EB was quick enough to finish really well at local autox events. It’s really not a slouch in standard guise, and if you are so inclined to improve the handling later you can just upgrade in the aftermarket.

As a pure daily the Mustang’s not the greatest choice, I’ll be honest. They’re still rather large cars with less than stellar visibility. Comfortable, yes, but not the most comfortable. They’re good grand tourers but so are other cars. Then again, for the money it’s really hard to beat.

I LOVE my GT. With a cheap exhaust it sounds the business and puts a smile on my face every day, and my current work situation does the complete opposite of make me smile so that’s saying something. It’s properly fast in a straight line and seems to handle well enough though I only have autocross to judge it with here. The EB I enjoyed immensely as well but I was always slightly bothered by the “why no V8?” mentality both projected at me and questioned internally.

I don’t think I could do a pure commuter car. I need a little bit of excitement, even if it is only going fast on one off-ramp or blasting around an inattentive Prius driver. If I wanted something totally practical, I’d go with a Kia Soul. But, I would feel like I’m giving up a lot in the name of practicality.

I want something that is fun to drive but wont beat you up. A German sports sedan would be perfect but I will gladly trade power for refinement. Plus, I don’t really want the image of going to work in a “luxury” car, even if I did buy it for $3000 off craigslist. I get what you are saying about the smile factor. That is hugely important after a stressful day.

I don’t think the “her der u shouldve bought da V8" really matters to me. Internally, I don’t care because my other car is a V8. I’m not sure if it will bother me from an external standpoint but I doubt it. I drive a green Beetle and a Miata. A few people have attempted to give me shit on both. My answer is, and will always be: “I didn’t buy the car for you. I bought it for me.” That usually works pretty well, and it is the truth. And at the end of the day, the little Ecoboost has more HP than my Ferrari haha.

I really appreciate your honest input, though. It helps to see both sides of the coin. If I was looking for just a fun car or a do everything car, this wouldn’t even be a debate. The V8 would be the answer. I’m not buying a car this weekend or anything so I have time to mull it over. For under 20k though, it’s hard to find something better :)
