I would recommend to not buy the Laguna II.
Under No. Circumstance.
Also: no Velsatis, the Megane II is a bit more reliable, but in general: forget anything Renault during the Velsatis era.

Maybe all French cars are to avoid in these years?

How much does an Avantime go for?

Pre facelift 406 Coupe:

(Can be had in a vast range of colour variations, though one with interior leather in an actual colour is best IMHO. Stay away from post facelift models, because they ruined the Pininfarina design)

Renault Avantime:

Probably an e34 m5 touring if prices aren’t through the roof. Edit, nevermind

No. Peugeots from the x 06 generation are fine, as are Citroëns from that era. That era ended roughly around your cutoff year.

So: Peugeot 406 coupe (I own one with 313k km: bulletproof + rust free), 306 (GTI?), 106 (GTI/Sport/Rallye?), Citroën Saxo, Xantia, Xsara, all fine. With a normal “used car” disclaimer obviously, as with all older cars you can find gems and absolute dogs.

technically 2003 and they probably depreciate that much :D

No, just the Renaults. They only fixed the reliability issues around 2004-2005.

Peugeots/Citroëns of the late 90s early 00s are actually very reliable. (In my experience)

In that same period, Peugeot made the 206, one of the greatest mass produced Peugeots in my opinion.
Then there was the last years of the 106, 406, and 406 coupe. There was also the 607, which while having it’s issues, is still one of the best looking cars of that time.

Post facelift 406 coupe is too new for him anyway. Last year only (2004?). So all that meet his age requirement are fine.

Generally between €3000-10000, depending on the mileage, colour (hardly any blue ones below 7k for instance), and engine.

Wait, you bash french cars and recommend the Alfa 156?
There’s a reason those cost next to nothing

€3-9k or so. Not the best era for Renault though. They had a few years of horrible reliability early this century. They’ve been absolutely fine for a decade or so now, but that doesn’t help the Avantime.

Forgot about the 306, but finding a good GTI is not too easy

Peugeots/Citroëns from that era are problably more reliable than the BMW as well and on par with the Mondeo, but without the Ford rust issues.

Here’s one in the Netherlands for €3k. Good condition, peeling clearcoat on the roof, some wear on the seats (as seen in the pictures)  https://link.marktplaats.nl/m1213681202

Maybe not directly bashing, but advising to avoid any french cars of that period. It was mainly Renault who had terrible cars at that time

So what are you looking for? Small, large, sporty, comfortable, wagon, convertible, gasoline, diesel? The diversity is huge and you’re looking at cars at the bottom of their depreciation curve, so you’ve got a lot to choose from.

Then again, one is a phase 1 that was transformed into a phase 3, one is caged and has a flat black front bumper and hood, and the last one has a mismatching hood and a “save the ring” sticker

It’s always been (one of many) a dream to have car that wasn’t sold here just to be different and confuse people around.

It has to a space for two kids for small errands and be somewhat reliable, because of the non-availability of parts. Everything else is quite open

That’s my tip then; the 406 coupe. It’s my daily. Reliable, spacious, comfortable, excellent chassis from a personal luxury coupe point of view. Parts, other than bumpers, are cheap and easy to source (in Europe). They’re quite cheap too, you can easily find and ship a nice one for your budget.

I would not go for anything french from the early 00's, even the more basic cars (206, Xsara) have electrical problems. It might sound odd but a Fiat or an Alfa might be a better choice, still unreliable but better looking and handling. A Seat or Skoda might also be a good choice, you get a VW but without the VW badge.
