Why not replace my recently sold Megane with an Alfa 156?

Because I already have enough cars to constantly repair and not enough time.

Anyway, a friend of mine came by with his Focus for an oil change and a trailer hitch install.
One of his colleagues now asked if I could change the clutch and main seal on his Alfa 156 1,9 jtd.
Having never worked on these, and having enough to do with my own cars, I’m not really motivated to do it. So I told my friend I would do it if he doesn’t find anyone else, but not before 2 weeks, which he apparently took as an ok (nobody wants to work on these I guess?).
Has anyone of you ever worked on these? Draining engine and transmission, dropping wheels, half-shafts, transmission, clutch, flywheel, change seal, reinstall flywheel, throw in new clutch, reinstall the transmission, half-shafts, wheels, and put in fluids. How hard can it be? Should be done in 4 hours including a small coffee break, hopefully. Please don’t tell me I’m wrong.

Not worked on a JTD, but should be easier than my V6 simply because the engine’s smaller.

Needed to grind down the socket for the front hubs on mine as a large enough impact one was too big to fit inside the lip on the hub.

The subframe bolts are easy enough on mine because I’ve had them on and off a number of times, but I have read about it being tricky sometimes with stuck bolts breaking nuts off inside the box sections. Impact gun should prevent that being a problem (basically, just don’t crank on them with a massive breaker bar if they’re tight).

Also, pretty damn jealous of your ‘shop. All that workspace and lifts to boot!

Draining the engine is pretty straightforward, transmission is kind of fucky, because the drain hole is on a very shitty place and you should look on google for pics. Getting the transmission down and removing the flywheel and changing the clutch is not a problem, access is good.4 hours are a good estimate.

156/147/GT are good cars and if you happen to get a low mileage, well maintained car, they are good to own. 150k+ km cars are not advisable to be purchased, because they start getting some wear and tear problems.

And the JTD versions is a must, as the petrol engines are horrible, unreliable, gas guzzling pieces of shit.

Thanks for the info! It should be alright then, I was just afraid of some Alfa wizardry :)

I like the styling they had around that time, a colleague who I often carpooled with had a GT. Nice car, but it started having all kinds of problems with 200k km

I think I must have something fitting, I have all kinds of tools at home.
I just hope no bolts will fight back.
It’s one thing to grind and replace stuff on my cars, but I want to avoid doing that on someone elses car

Actually the Busso V6 is a very good engine, as it is old as dirt. Also it looks mad good.

But, I will deal with the devil, before getting myself in the trouble that is TS.
