Kinja'd!!!

Last month I attended the 6 Hours of COTA in Austin. This was my first circuit race experience, so I figured I ought to make it memorable. I decided to shoot photos on my trusty Canon AE-1 SLR. I brought a few different rolls of film and both lenses I own for this camera: a 50mm and a 28mm. Not exactly the ideal lenses to shoot a race with, but my entire camera collection (film and digital) is sorely lacking in telephoto lenses. I’d just make it work. This was my first time shooting ~fast cars~ on a circuit with film, so while these shots aren’t perfect by any means, I’m pretty pleased with how most of them turned out. Let me know what you think!

Nice! Love the 35mm, so timeless. Reminds me to get mine out and shoot!

Thanks! No matter how many filters you run digital photos through, you just can’t match the feel of film.

Thanks! I definitely learned a lot, so the photos should be better next time around. I need to invest in some ND filters to control the exposures better.

Manual or autofocus? I’ve been out there a couple times this summer, and shot all of it manual (old glass) on my 5D2. Hard as hell to get the focus right, especially because I pretty much keep the 50mm at f/2, and adjust shutter and ISO as fast as possible when switching between sun and shade.

I love how filmy it looks when using the old lenses.

Those are some great shots you have there. I’m more of a Nikon guy outside of this AE-1 that I use. The old Nikon glass that came with my Nikon EM mounts right up to my D3100. I have an old Sears F-mount 28mm f/2.8 that has a ridiculously smooth focus ring, making it great for video use.

The other night I was actually thinking that I should have brought my Minolta Maxxum 7000 instead of the AE-1 for COTA. I actually have a “beercan” 70-210mm f/4 telephoto for it and I didn’t even think about it! Hindsight is 20/20 I suppose.

NICE. I sometimes want to get the old Leica bodies out and put their lenses back on their rightful mounts, but I just don’t think I’d have enough patience for film anymore. It’s hard enough for me even to find the time to process the digital pics.

Yeah, not to mention the cost. It was about $65 to develop & scan three rolls of film. I don’t shoot a whole lot these days, but I find that I end up liking a larger percentage of my film shots compared to digital. The limited frame count forces me to really think about what I want to shoot and how I want to shoot it.
