The ideal daily?

Been looking for a daily for a few months now, but can’t seem to lock down what exactly what I want. Don’t have any real preference on car, truck or SUV. If it’s something kind of plain, maybe up to $3k, up to $5k if it’s something cool. I have a 27 mile round commute to school and a 14 mile for work so mpg’s are kinda important. What would you be looking for given these loose parameters?

Corolla.

It is boring. But it is very, very good at commuting.

Maybe a Fit with a 5MT.

I would look at a Camry or Fit as others have said. You really can’t go wrong with something reliable in cheap to fix. Especially in college.

Actually, I think a 2003 maxima would be kinda cool with the 6 speed.

You get 255hp, a 6 speed manual, and a decent interior. Look out for oil consumption though. They have a beam in the rear so they aren’t great handling cars, but they also don’t suck in that department either.

Mazda3. I had one for six years and it was great. Current owners still have it and it just passed 100k with no real issues. I saw as high as 36 MPG on the highway - even with the 2.3 which isn’t known for great gas mileage.

The rust issue was fixed with the later ones. Mine was a 2008 and had zero issues with rust and I drove it year round. It was a little beast in the snow.

27 miles? Damn. I do close to 100.

They’re boring as sin, but old GM j-bodies make decent commuter cars as well. I certainly wouldn’t pick them over a Corolla or Fit, but they’d work.

This is the only recommendation on here that doesn’t make me sad. Cheap and reliable doesn’t have to mean beige econo-mobile

Right?! It was the only cheap reliable vehicle that didn’t make me sad to drive. Why would anyone buy some of these suggestions?

Are Mazda2s that cheap yet? Mazda3, Prius (mpgs!), Volvo S40/V50 (wagon!!), Ford Fusion/Mercury Milan Hybrid, Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner/Mazda Tribute Hybrid, Toyota Camry... Long long list.
