Some people really dislike the “ground speed” label. I think it’s a neat little detail that is easily ignored completely within minutes of ownership.

I think it would be better if they were able to make it change to “air speed” if the tires just so happened to leave the ground.

Then it would be freaking awesome.

This checks out.

Had a 2017 GT for about 6 months now, I still notice it quite a bit actually. To me I kind of like it due to the fact that John Najjar, who co-designed the first prototype of the Mustang was a fan of the WW2 fighter plane, the P-51 Mustang.

Well, Airspeed has nothing to do with being physically airborne. A car could certainly show a different airspeed than ground speed.

Airspeed is simply your velocity through air. Air of course not being a static medium. Airspeed is measured as the difference between stagnation pressure on the front of your vehicle (by a Pitot tube) and the static pressure of the air around you. If you’re driving into a headwind your airspeed is higher than your GPS measured ground speed would be.

That’s why I don’t like the hate the “GROUND SPEED” label gets. Typically people dismiss it because “WELL DUH ITS GROUND SPEED UR ON THE GROUND”. It’s similar to people saying FWD cars don’t need wings, as if the drive wheels really have anything to do with downforce. Sure, a FWD car probably doesn’t need as much grip in the rear as a car driving the rear wheels, but downforce still helps handling.

/rant.

Thank you for ruining a funny idea with pedantry. :)

I’m an engineer, it’s what we do

And that’s why us in the various engineering professions are such buzzkills at parties.

Occasionally someone throws a release party. It really just means standing around with orange juice talking about the project that just wrapped up, which we had been talking about for the previous 6-9 months or so.
