Is this a common thing?

When you have a car that’s fairly uncommon and not the best parts availability, you tend to recycle parts from dead cars for it. With the Accord Euro-R wheels, my Prelude now has OEM parts from at least 9 different cars: 3 Accords (2 Japanese and 1 American) and at least 6 Preludes. This isn’t a rare thing in the Prelude world, but how is it in other car communities?

I’m sure it’s very common in the Jeep community. My CJ3A has parts from a CJ5, CJ7, Chevy truck, Ford Mustang, Ford van, TJ, and YJ.

Yes, using parts cars is extremely common.

Pretty much a necessity for a fair few forgotten cars of the 70s and 80s (and some after with sparse parts support).

Hell, even my Spit which has great parts support now has bits from a 2000 saloon, 2.5PI saloon, GT6 and an E60 5-Series :)

Gets trickier though when you move away from the excellent parts compatibility of the Honda world...

Divorce didn’t even have to swap any parts onto his V8 Vantage, it came stock with parts from various Jags, Fords and Volvos.

My mk3 jetta had some mk2 bits as well as assorted bits and bobs from several trim and option packages and I think I had some golf parts on there too.

What type of wheels do you have? I know there are a couple of variants of the Euro R wheels, there was a guy selling a set, that I was very interested in for the ITR, but Im wondering about the weight...

The 00-02 JDM ones. They’re noticeably lighter than the stock blades and are the same size and offset. I’m not sure how they compare to ITR wheels, though.

Those are exactly the wheels I contemplated on getting. Hmm, I might actually go and do it...

My ‘87 Peugeot 205 CTi convertible will have:

engine from a Lancia Zeta,

transmission hybrid consisting of the transmissions of a 205 turbo diesel (5th gear) and a 205 GTi 1.9 (rest)

entire front suspension and wheels from a 205 GTi 1.9

front brake calipers/discs/pads from a Peugeot 307

an engine mount from a Citroën Xantia 2.0 8V

power steering rack from a Citroën Xsara

intercooler from some Opel I believe

larger diameter brake master cylinder from an obscure version of the Peugeot 405

All of this will look (close to) stock. No welding needed, no home made parts or special adapters. Only the intercooler and its mounting will require some creativity.

So yes. Normal.

Very good point, yes they are. Actually a lot of Japanese companies are.

Interestingly, they get it from a bit of an odd place. Parts interchangeability was actually a big drive in BMC and British Leyland back in the 60s, which were companies who had a lot of influence over the early stages of Japanese car companies*. So, you find a lot of the same in British Leyland cars, for all of their other faults :)

*If you look at a lot of early Datsun engines for instance they’re like-for-like copies of BMC engines, except with build quality of motivated workers rather than underpaid and disgruntled ones.

My Caprice ppv has ctsv2wheels, ctsv1 brakes, G8 rear seats and various interior pieces, hsv gts front seats, Aussie Caprice steering wheel and spoiler, middle east market front grille.

All related cars, but yeah lots of sources of parts

Very common in the Volvo community. Even though there are a few companies these days that can find about any part you’d need, most Volvo owners are cheapskates who’d rather salvage spare parts anyway. It helps that they made the 200 series for nearly 20 years and the 700 series for 10.

Super common for me attending to a fleet of off warrenty mercedes. Every car has bits and bobs from atleast 4 others. My first car has had pieces pulled from well over a dozen.

Let’s see. I could get OEM parts for my GTO, but when I want factory parts there are so many guys selling off the stuff they replaced that about 50% of the time I can get good OEM parts off another cer without breaking the bank buying new parts.

Those look like a smaller version of RSX A-Spec wheels

Yeah, they’re very similar. The spokes on the A-Spec wheels look like they flare out a little more at the outside.

Good to see you are also adding a bit more stop with your go. Funny to see how all these parts can come together without requiring any realy modifications.

What’s the status on the build, will it be done before March? ;)

I use to do this a lot on my old Kawasaki Ninja ZX600. Had coils from a Zx-9, hand control bits from a Ninja 250, lots of parts from an entire parts bike I hat, even part of a shifter from a Harley I found in a ditch. O and a rubber gas tank bushing made from the bottom part of a roadcone!

Kinja'd!!! "duurtlang" (duurtlang)
10/19/2017 at 12:43, STARS: 1

I’m confident it’ll be done before March. The build is outsourced though. Engine is done (but not installed yet), all parts are there. The (shallow) rust is being addressed now.

Kinja'd!!!

Besides the extra stop (the brakes from larger engined 307s, not the smaller ones from the base versions) it’s getting the entire front suspension from a 1.9 GTi as well. I’m not doing the rear axle though, so it’ll keep the drums there (1.9 GTi had rear discs).

All of the parts are original PSA though, with the Lancia motor donor being a rebadged Peugeot/Citroën. So plug and play away. You just need to watch diameters and the like. I needed GTi 1.9 drive axles for example as they have a larger diameter at the steering knuckle, and I needed that larger diameter steering knuckle for the larger calipers, which in turn I needed for the bigger brakes. The engine can be mounted with standard motor mounts, but that’s not that odd as it’s from the same engine family.

Oh, I didn’t know it was a bit rusty. That’s not one of the typical 205 spots is it?

I knew all the parts where PSA, but it’s still impressive that many parts are interchangable between models. It really shows how well they’ve optimised their products/production.

The edge between rear wheel well and the sill is a common spot. My GTi had it, my old beater does too. On all of them it was shallow though. No holes, nothing crispy. But as I’m spending way too much on this CTi already, surely all rust should be eliminated. So it was sanded and treated. No welding needed.

The only real non-shallow rust spot was behind the headlights on the inner wings, which is only visible with the hood opened. That has been addressed with rust free donor parts. Very common 205 spot as well. My GTi has it, my beater strangely not as much.
