Kinja'd!!!

I’m working beside a gravel pit so this morning I drove over and asked the boys in the scale house if they’d weigh my truck.

2012 Silverado LTZ crew cab 4x4 short box 5.3L.

With me in it, as well as some gear, an estimated combined total of 300lbs. They gave me 2740kg, or 6040lbs. A bit of a surprise since the manufacturer curb weight for my spec’d truck is, as far as I can find on the Google is 5340lbs.

I thought curb weight was the vehicle with fluids as it sits ready for the customer. Is that spec weight minus a few things like spare tire, floor mats, etc.?

Did you have a full tank of gas? I doubt if the curb weight includes that.

The curb weight often excludes gas. If you are Italian you weigh the car bone dry.

The definition of “curb weight” is ill-defined and not standardized across the industry. It may mean full of fluids and a full tank of gas to one manufacturer, it may mean full of fluids but no gas, or full of fluids and gas and a driver.

Curb weight for a specific model or trim is usually the “base” config with no options. options add weight.

Fuel tank full would add only about 160lb, so there are some other things adding weight. Clearly.

If their curb weight is short fluids, there’s another maybe 15lb in oil, 20-30lb in trans fluid, 30lb in coolant, etc. which still leaves over 400lb unaccounted for.

LTZ is likely why.

Curb weight in the US is defined as:

“ Curb weight means the actual or the manufacturer’s estimated weight of the vehicle in operational status with all standard equipment , and weight of fuel at nominal tank capacity, and the weight of optional equipment computed in accordance with § 86.1832-01 ; incomplete light-duty trucks shall have the curb weight specified by the manufacturer.”

So, it includes rated fuel in the tank, it includes all other fluids, but it doesn’t necessarily include all options.

Yeah, I hate how unreliable those curb weight ratings can be. Good on you for getting a real measurement.

I wasn’t expecting it to be quite that much more than my truck, though. Wow! I weighed my ’95 C2500 on a junkyard scale, and was real careful to have all fluids (even gas) full and zero cargo (I even weighed myself at home so that I could subtract that number). The result- my standard cab, long bed, 350, auto trans truck weighs 4400 lbs total.

US curb weight ratings include all fluids, including a full tank of fuel.

That’s why the Alfa 4c has like 5 different weights

Do you have power heated seats? Those motors and heaters will add a lot of weight over the manual seats in a work spec truck. Also, I just checked the 2018 WT trim, power windows is not mentioned, so your window motors are more additional weight.

Not saying I wholly trust the internet, but I did my best, including the GM brochure which breaks out GVWR and payload for each model and cab configuration, and GVWR-payload= 5300lbs for my truck. And found curb weight on each axle, combined comes up at 5300lbs.

What does your door sticker payload say? I believe that one is updated with the actuals options on the truck.

Kinja'd!!!

My Tacoma; 2230kgs = 4916lbs

listed curb weight is 4135lbs

780lbs of added weight includes canopy, bigger tires, tools, recovery gear, all the stuff inside, fuel, extra fuel, extra lights, etc, etc.. and me.

The scale is the only way to get real numbers, everything else is just a spec in a book.

“estimated” I’d wager that manufacturers know they can round down a bit to inflate hauling/towing numbers not to mention power/weight

Little bit higher than your initial estimate, but not crazy. Guess you just have a lot of shit in your truck.

Yea, and I guess I should’ve considered my all terrain tires weigh more than the factory biscuits, running boards, tonneau cover. Just those things make up the difference from door sticker (minus the gear I already accounted for). Needed to give more consideration to the add-ons.

Door sticker is definitely the way to go, i think reviews should start using that instead of the press release.

Pickuptrucks.com has a number of articles talking about real world payload and towing, and specifically talk about the door stickers. They also had a few examples were a half-ton truck was largely useless for truck duties (Raptor, Ram Rebel) due to very low payloads.
