Nintendo c. 1996: Super Mario 64 is on the forefront of 3D platformer games. The technology hadn’t quite caught up so they had to use one of the most powerful processors ever created when designing the Nintendo 64, and they even needed a memory boost for some other games. No one else has attempted such a game to the extent that Nintendo has with this game. 21 years later, it’s still rock-solid.

Turn 10: “We’re essentially recycling the same physics and graphics engine since Forza Motorsport 5. Most of the models and sounds are recycled as well. We have the opportunity to improve upon what we’ve done in the past and come out with something truly remarkable”

My biggest problem is still how disposable the cars feel. They are all automatically upgraded and you only need one of any given type for like 5 races before never touching them again.

That’s my biggest issue too. All the driver sims these days have decent enough physics and beautiful graphics....but I miss the days of starting off with 10,000 credits, and can only afford an econobox. The first races are slow but slightly difficult, and each win buys you another upgrade. After grinding for an hour, you can afford a sweet ride and thus starts the domination of all the races in the game.

Modern Forza just hands you cars, and actually outlaws you from altering it in anyway possible for the race. It almost makes it seem that your ‘driver level’, ‘COLLECTION level’ and driver suits are more important than actually racing....

They ruined everything

The joy of Gran Turismo was always when you’d get to the point where you’d be able to afford the faster car, you’d buy it, drive it, realize you had perfectly tuned and mastered driving your shitbox, sell the nice car and continue winning races in the thing you started in.

I’d argue the Dreamcast and PS1 were equally as important, if not moreso, to the development of 3D video games (and even online in the case of the Dreamcast).

Either way, FM7 still sucks.
