Those few people who complained need life.

In case Kinja eats it.

However, at the meeting it was revealed that the majority of those complaints were made by one person.

For once I agree with the city. As long as the sidewalk is not being blocked I don’t see an issue.

“You imposing this bylaw would mean that I would have to tell my daughter that she either gets dance lessons, or I store my boat,“ another resident said.

Wait, what?

My HOA says the same. No boats, trailers, RV or unregistered or covered vehicle for more than 2 days. Yet the ex-president/founder brings his RV in for family mid-November to mid-January.

Guessing if he has to pay to store his boat somewhere he won’t be able to afford his daughter’s dance lessons.

The complaints brought up concerns about driver... visibility

An RV or boat in the driveway poses no extra hazard to driver visibility, at least not toward drivers in the road. It could be argued that being parked next to one might limit one’s ability to see the sidewalk on that side while pulling out of the driveway... But you’d have that same problem if a van or SUV had been parked there instead.

The complaints brought up concerns about... pedestrian visibility

If it’s blocking the crosswalk, yes. Could’ve picked a better photo for the article, though, to illustrate this. Otherwise, I’m gonna have to call bullshit .

The complaints brought up concerns about... visual aesthetic.

I’m more concerned about the visual aesthetic of the critics’ faces. Especially the one who’s making the “majority” of those 73 complaints.

That much was quite obvious, thanks.

There’s no context in the situation so I’m making a ton of assumptions, but it surprisingly seems like he would chose keeping a boat over extra-curriculars for his daughter.

Understood, but this place didn’t have those restrictions in effect and the people were fighting to keep it that way. Good on them.

But as long as you know the rules going in, then no bitching if to break the rules and get caught. The neighborhood my family lived in during my high school years didn’t allow for outbuildings or extending the front of the house past the current Front face of the house, but those were provisions in the subdivision when it was constructed back in 1970, we moved in in the 90s, so we knew what we were getting into. You could apply for a variance, our neighbors did, but they had to get approval from the closest surrounding residence first.

If the household budget is that razor thin, then maybe he shouldn’t have a boat in the first place...

Sorry, had a bit of a dense moment. I agree - as a father, given that choice I’d think “sell the boat” would be the default answer with little hesitation. But what if the girl loves both dancing AND time spent on the boat with the family? Which of course would be one of those pesky details you mentioned. Sorry for the snark. Long day. :)

I’ve never heard anything about boating described as inexpensive. Again, making a ton of assumptions about the situation and hell, maybe it’s a non-issue and he just chose a poor argument.

As a not-a-father, I’d totally think ‘sell the boat’ as well. If she loves dancing and boating, or dancing on boats, then maybe she’s just got really expensive taste. Make a decision!
