started up the 3 this morning and it felt really rough. Stared driving and the light came on. It feels really rough and doesn’t gain rpm linearly. Feels like it’s not running on all cylinders, feels sort of like my explorer when it was running on 5 cylinders. It’s at the dealer now, hopefully they can look at it soon. Oh well, guess the M3 is about to get pressed into DD duties.

scan with INPA -> look at where misfires are -> plugs -> coils -> injectors -> light it on fire.

Did you scan codes before dropping it off? That can be a double-edged sword, it’s nice to at least know the code(s), but then it leads to worrying about potential 4-figure repair bills.

Hmmm I had a similar problem with my 328i once when I crossed 90k. I forgot the code I pulled, but new coils and plugs took care of it.

Sounds like coils to me. Had the same thing happen the last couple times I had to replace a coil in mine. They are very easy to replace yourself if you have a little extra time.

Let us know what you find out! I’ve had a phantom misfire on mine, but no codes. I replaced plugs, cleaned out VANOS solenoids, cleaned out eccentric shaft sensor connector.. no change. I believe I’m on original coils at 120k miles, but forums suggest coils either work or they don’t (not occasional idle misses). I’ve been hoping for a code so I can isolate the problem, but might replace all six coils as PM.

A friend of mine had an E46 with Volvo/Audi syndrome. It was just a coil, hopefully the same for you.
