A few days ago I bought a riveter. Just a little hand tool. You can buy one like this for 10 bucks at Walmart with 40 rivets in a range of sizes.

Well the rod in my wife’s closet seemed a bit to long to not have a support in the middle, so I decided to fix that before she stars hanger her close up(we just moved) I had some spare metal straps so that was my go to. In the passed I’ve held these together with an 8mm bolt and nut. It’s a real pita. But I thought this would be a good application for rivets. And I was right! This job took half the time.

If you’re wondering why that looks like a kitchen cabinet it’s because it is. Our room used to be a living room and kitchen. We bought the triplex that we used rent on apartment in, and converting to a duplex. We needed an additional bedroom for my nephew now that he’s living with us, and figured having some rental income would be nice. Got a good deal on the house too, paid about 60% of its estimated value because we bought it from my FIL.

Wait till you start repairing plastic parts with them. My motorcycle in college was a craigslist special that had been crashed multiple times. All the aluminum patches are covering holes or reinforcing cracks

They are as handy as zip ties.

I would almost say more handy. Because you can use them in places where you can’t reach the back side of what you’re working on. But you also have to have to surfaces that meet. You can ziptie stuff together that’s a foot apart or more

All of my structural engineering projects in college started with being handed sheet aluminum...needless to say, we quickly learned how to build everything with a bending brake and pop riveting. Glorious times.

Nice. It’s a great life hack, especially if it’s too cold for epoxy to cure.

Rivets have a much higher melting temp compared to zip ties.

Button head rivets are more fun to install and more versatile except for not being able to reach the back side.

I really want to try that kind of riveting. I’ve thought about buying a cheap air hammer and rivet set for that reason.

You don’t need a specialized air hammer at all. They have standard .401 shaft bits for whatever your chosen head shape is that will fit into a standard air chisel... which you should have one of anyway.

Yeah, I’ve had my eye on one on Amazon for a bit. It’s on my wish list. There’s a few rivet sets that I’ve found online as well. Finding the rivets in my neck of the woods might be tricky though. The one thing I really want to try making with it is a WWII style rooftop carrier for my car, made from riveted aluminum. Definitely an ambitious project. I imagine I wouldn’t be doing that as a first project, but something I’d work up to doing.
