Another Forza 7 Gripe

A couple weeks ago I complained that Forza 7 wasn’t very good . Thanks to the awesomeness of fellow Oppos, many of my problems were correctable within various menu options. Now, I have another complaint, but am not sure how to correct it.

My issue is with the difficulty settings - I always run aids off, damage on and Expert level driveatars. That was wayyy too easy - I was winning races on the Long setting by over a minute. Okay, bump it up to Pro. Now, it’s frankly too hard. The difficulty increase doesn’t seem linear at all. I’m not sure how I go from winning very easily to the next setting where I’m losing by 20+ seconds.

I just did a race last night at Suzuka in my Cayman GT4. After the first lap (of 13) I climb to 7th, then am able to pick off at least one car per lap. So, by lap 7, I’m in second position. At this point, the leader is so far ahead, I can’t even see them on the course map. I may have made up a little distance on them in the remaining six laps, but not after they had such a large headstart. It’s bullshit. How are all the other cars so much slower than one car? At the race results, the fastest lap by me and the winner were rather close - I was about a half second faster, but he had built such a lead during the time I was stuck working through traffic, it didn’t matter, even in a race on the Long setting.

I wish they’d allow the option to qualify - even if I didn’t start on the pole, I’d at least have a better shot at keeping up before the leader slingshots away from the pack.

Sounds like the same problem as F6. My solution was to dive bomb into the first turn in a dangerous and desperate attempt to get closer to the front of the pack. Lots of restarts as a result. It was magnified in 6 because the races were so short. You could be 1 second faster than the leader and finish in 2nd.

Well I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing that the difficulty levels are not linear in progression. Also, though this felt like a big jump to you, it might have fell like a smaller, “linear” jump to someone else (yes I know the drivatars are supposed to adjust to your driving).

I just made the same drivatar difficulty jump from Expert to Pro after one race in the SUV series of the Breakout Championship. The next few races did feel somewhat more difficult, but I hit the brick wall as you described on the final race, at that weird short circuit at Road America with only three turns. Granted, at that circuit, nailing the first two turns is what’s most important, and I’ve been hot garbage on those two for my entire virtual racing career.

Unfortunately there’s nothing you can do about it. This has been an issue throughout the entire series and it’s never been changed. If you don’t get up to the head of the pack within a couple of laps you have no chance of winning because the lead car has a ridiculous advantage over everyone else. There’s a reason everyone hated M. Rossi.

Good to know I’m not the only one. I’ve tried to break that habit of dive-bombing the first few corners, but there’s not much else I can do from P12, even in a 7-lap race.

Another thing of note is how FM7 scales it’s difficulty. The AI never changes its racing line or braking points when you change the difficulty level, the only thing that changes is how much power their car makes. Go set up a spec race in free play. It doesn’t matter what car you pick as long as you’re driving the exact same car as the AI. Do a race on easy and when you finish pull up the replay. Check your telemetry and make note of your peak power. Switch over to an AI car and you’ll see they’re making significantly less power even at full throttle. Do the same race on a high difficulty and check again. They’ll be making up to 40% more power than you.

Fun example: the Fast and Furious Plymouth GTX makes 2000 horsepower. In a race against AI driving that car they make close to 3000 goddamn horsepower.

Welcome to every racing game ever made. When you give me two laps, an entire field, and dumb ai, I don’t feel like I am learning or accomplishing anything. I feel like I am driving like a madman because damage doesn’t matter and I can’t pass 8 cars at once without some serious fuckery.

But once you do finally get in front, the lead car backs way off and you blow the whole pack away.

Which, honestly I am fine with at the lower AI settings. I don’t care for a challenge most evenings, I just want the win for the credits and progression. I hated FH3 because it was always reminding me to turn up the AI. NO! I don’t want to game, leave me alone!

Fak. That explains why I couldn’t do better than third place at the Daytona road course. I was faster throughout the tight sections, but they pulled me in QUICKLY on the high-speed oval section.

Yeah, the only thing that seems to work for me in those situations in to dive bomb the first turn and then block like a motherfucker for the rest of the race.

I cant find it right now but i recall some one on reddit showed racing with max difficulty and seeing an AI have a stock 700hp car in a 650hp limited race.

Now I am still on FM6, just waiting for FM7 to drop in price since they screwed it up so badly, but the difficulty was fairly linear where i think “Unbeatable” was the hardest but unfortunately still easy as you could still have a 10 second gap on the field. That all changed with Horizon 3 where “Unbeatable” was truly that as AI could totally skip check points and be miles ahead of you after the first turn. Nice to see they have kept that......

Oh my gosh. Everything makes so much sense now. This explains so much. I could write a novel of my experiences in FH3 and now FM7 of AI frustrations that I didn’t understand until you pointed this out.

...And my feeling of amazement quickly gives way to being pissed. So at higher difficulties, no matter how well I drive in the corners, they’re gonna walk away from me in the straights. Wonderful.

That always pissed me smooth off on FH3 - I hated the cross-country races as it was, but if I barely missed a checkpoint, it would obviously force me to go back. During the race I’d see multiple AI cars miss checkpoints and be able to continue on unabated.

Same here. I wish there was a mercy rule mode (were you automatically won with a large enough lead.) Or an optional qualifying. (Would be much better.)

Yup. They trundle along through the corners and randomly stab the brakes at all difficulty levels. All that changes is whether you dust them on the straights or they dust you.

That’s a fantastic idea! I have my race setting on Long because I’d rather naturally work my way through the field than be forced to divebomb T1 and cause a wreck (even if I survive), but if I get like a 30+ second lead, there’s no way I’m going to lose, so mercy rule. Qualifying would be great because then you’d at least be able to start towards the front and could run a higher difficulty.

Ohhhhhhh the random stabbing of the brakes. I’m finally carrying momentum (which I NEED to keep up with them on the straights) and they randomly stab brakes mid-turn, causing me to brake or crash. Fuck them all!

I hear ya - I might just turn it back down to Expert and dominate again, or just save Pro for the courses I’m best at.

Have you tried out multiplayer yet? I’m seeing the same issues as you. I’m leaning towards jumping over to online if the matchmaking is decent. I typically play career in any racing game, but I might make the jump to online just to get better matched races.

Glad it’s not just me. I don’t know why it’s only 1 car who gets a major advantage on you. I’ve just been keeping it a lil easier and blowing them all away because the one car dominating is pissing me off

Not yet - GTA really soured me on playing online. You step out into the world and are immediately killed. If you manage to not get killed and kill someone else who tried to kill you, they put a bounty on you and everybody tries to kill you. You step outside where you respawn, someone is waiting and you die. You drive anything non-armored, someone armored comes along and you die. /GTArant

I tried playing the last version of Forza online and was underwhelmed, but maybe I’ll give a shot on 7.

On GTA you pretty much have to play in free-aim lobbies or you get that. Even some free-aim lobbies are full of shit head players.

Since switching though I’ve run across a lot less of that. As a bonus it’s usually a smaller lobby.

My main gripe cannot be corrected with any menu option:

A decent car list, like Forza 4.
