Kinja'd!!!

I made a budget for something I want to do and it would cost me $200,000. Anyone out there want to make a donation? I can promise you a big hug in return.

Just needed to share the ridiculous amount of money things can cost and it only involves buying 1 vehicle... ugh

No, much better than that

Right? Most of the time those things are terrible and I would have to spam social media for it to get me anywhere and I would hate to do that. Like seriously hate that!

I don’t think this will fit in a Sprite.

It said buying a car. Has nothing to do with the Sprite. Though if I had to sell the Sprite to make this happen I would... and the GTO.

I thought you said you were selling the GTO and getting that vintage Dodge, or whatever it was.

The Plymouth. Yes I tried to, but it wasn’t a viable option at the time and it was sold to a family friend that will keep it just perfect.

I was being coy about it because I don’t know if I want to share that. You know? Like I think it is a great idea, but this is the internet. I know Oppo is a much better place than every other corner of the internet, but still.

Wait, that engine costs $200k?!

Well then pretend I told you what it is. I will make a separate post about it later. Requires more information than writing it at work could handle.

No, I have no idea what a Merlin would run. I’m sure it’s expensive, but it can’t be $200k, I was just making s**t up.

I’m just excited because any $200k idea must be something really interesting - especially if it suddenly sounds more exciting than an F20C in a 1,600 lb. Brit.

Apparently that ar $20 grand

It actually is a really interesting idea and one I would really like to fulfill sooner rather than later. It is even quite the endeavor.

Cheaper than I would have thought for something that old, big and useful.

Well I don’t know how useful it is now

Oh, those engines are very useful still, in airplanes.

In cars they’re a bit silly, because they’re heavy (dry engine weighs what your Sprite weighs) and relatively low-revving.

Speaking of big hugs: when I was in college, the head of our dorm walked by and mentioned that we moved some furniture into the hall and it was a fire hazard.

I told him if he let us keep it there we were each prepared to offer him one “giant hug.”

Unfortunately, everyone heard it as “giant tug”

Pro tip: if you’re going to accidentally offer to jack off your dorm supervisor, make sure he has a sense of humor!

I mean they just don’t seem that useful for aircraft since you can power planes with STi motors....

I do want to create something ridiculous like that someday though.

Yeah, but you’re not going to get 1,500 HP at 3,000 RPM from a Subie Boxer. :)

Or, you could do a 144 month auto loan a 6.9%. Payment works out to around $2k / mo, less obviously if you put some cash down.

Totes serious -

No, I guess it depends on the type of plane you’re working on.

Kinja'd!!! "CaptDale - is secretly British" (captdale)

Only a portion of this is a car.... The rest is what is going to happen with the car.

Plus I couldn’t imagine a $2k a month for a car jesus

....so then you are going to buy a LaFerrari on a 144 month auto loan, keep it for 2 years, and end up with $3+ Million afterwards?

Yeah, the Merlin is for a much bigger, faster airplane than what you’d put an STi motor in.

Kinja'd!!! "CaptDale - is secretly British" (captdale)
10/17/2017 at 19:00, STARS: 1

Or a much bigger, much more badass car!

Now if we go with the proper Merlin 130/131 most powerful version with 2060 hp used in the D.H.103 Hornet Sea Hornet

Kinja'd!!!

That would make a cool plane or car

Kinja'd!!! "WilliamsSW" (williamssw)
10/17/2017 at 20:04, STARS: 0

You could do a lot of very cool things with that motor.

TBH though most of the Merlin powered cars I’ve seen are weirdly proportioned, thanks to the size of that engine.

The Sea Hornet is a cool airplane - most of Dehavillands wartime work was—

Yes they are. I was thinking something prewar looking like a Bentley Blower mixed with an early Bugatti.

I find it crazy how tall they are even with a dry sump

200k does not sound unreasonable, that’s the problem isn’t it. Uncomprimising custom cars are expensive. I would think it would cost somewhere in the realm of 100k-125k to have a shop recreate Project Binky. The amount of man hours going into that build is staggering. The car that I want to build, no limits, would probably be in the same neighborhood.

It only seems crazy when you add it all up, so don’t.
