The last [blue] plates that were to be phased out carried an 8-02 expiration, with the exception of the limited-issue “We the People” 1987 plate, which continues to be valid with registration renewal.

I always liked that design better than the blue-white-yellow stripe (seriously, what do those colors even mean - the state flag is just blue?).
Also, putting the website on there instead of a nickname or motto is just stupid. It might have had some novelty value if they had done it in like 1995 or 1996, but by 2002, the idea of putting your web address on absolutely everything had already become played out.

The tri-color plates were never the greatest. I’m still on the fence whether I like the 1999-2003 issued plates with the fade between the colors or the 2004+ issued plates without the fade between the colors better.
The web address debuted on the initial release of the tri-color plates back in 1999. PA holds the distinction of being the first state to put their web address on the plate, so it did have a bit of novelty. It just wore off very quickly.

Very much a ‘90s thing. I had a boss that insisted on putting our web address on absolutely everything, typically in place of our company logo or even our actual name.
His secretary said he started doing it around the time our website launched in 1997 and just never figured out when to stop. He also kept a hit counter on our homepage until about 2010 or so.

Hang onto those plates! You can now use old license plates in place of the typical Vintage plates in PA (I think it started in 2012). It only goes to 1976 though, to the annoyance of someone I know who would totally do this but has a Camaro from 1988.

I’m bummed that here in Ohio you can only run year-of-manufacture if you have historic registration, which comes with all the strings that boil down to “you can’t actually drive this, legally”
