I don’t go on Bring a Trailer that much, namely because I want to buy things. There’s a well-maintained but high-mileage 540i/6speed m-sport right now that is just killing me. Not only do I not need another high-mileage German car in my household (we have two already), I really need a wagon with two kids and two dogs anyway.

But if we’re gonna be unrealistic, let’s skip over cars that run and drive and I can actually afford. I present to you, Yet Another Barn Find Porsche That Will Sell For More Than A Brand New Econobox With A Warranty Despite Massive Rust Holes And an Incomplete, Disassembled Engine:

Kinja'd!!!

WTF is wrong with me, that I really want this? In particular, I want to fix all the mechanicals and critical rust, then just drive it without addressing the body. Or is the Rat Rod thing overdone, at this point?

Or like, put a Honda engine in it just to annoy the Porsche purists.

None of this matters, anyway.

Buy a beat up 912 instead. You can always upgrade it to a six or a killer 4-cyl VW engine.

(example, but don’t buy from these guys!!!)

Or if you insist on annoying the Purschists, you can drop a turbo Subi engine in it.

Bah. Gen V LT1/LT4 swap. Who needs engine driven power steering anyway?

But by LS, we mean the non-VTEC Integra motor.

And make it FWD

I didn’t dare to say that. Maybe some purist would find out where I live and and beat me to death with a boxer engine crankshaft.

There we go. All the looks and feels of a classic Porsche without (most of) the 911 tax. But you’re right, that one in the picture is insane. No floors, $20k. Or is that really how they’re priced?!

Unfortunately yes, you likely aren’t going to find one for $10k unless its in the same shape as the 356 above. They have succumbed to the 911 insanity, but if you keep your eyes open you should be able to find a running example for $15,000 or less that’s worthy of preservation (not restoration).

Yes. Sooo much this. I’ve seen that before but had to watch again. I love that car and the attitude of the owner.

That’s great. I suspect the prior owner’s daughter wasn’t happy with the ending, though.

There’s a local shop near me that comes up with cars like this from time to time. They’ve got a ‘75 911 for sale right now that’s not crazy money. And a 2002 (bmw that is) for decent money.

I feel like, even though prices for the new ones are totally bonkers, the modern equivalent of the 912 is probably the first-gen boxster. They’re not crazy expensive to buy right now, and I suspect their values are near bottom.

That’s what I have, a 986 (2003 2.7).

A very low-mileage 1997 2.5 Boxster can be had for about $10k right now if you can find one. And believe it or not, in five years that car will be 25 years old. It will never appreciate like a 911, but the curve is going to start swinging the other way. I think the original 97, the 2000 Boxster S (first year for the S), and 2004 550 Spyders will likely be the ones to hold on to. (the 987 Spyders as well, but those have not really depreciated for obvious reasions).

If you can do some of your own wrenching, the maintenance isn’t too bad. Parts are not cheap, but will likely always be plentiful. Find a 2003-2004 roller with a blown/IMS engine, and you can drop a 3.6 Carrera engine in it without having to swap the DME/electronics. If I only had more room in the garage....
