Gather ‘round, children, for a story you’ve heard far too many times.
My coworker drives a manual Nissan Cube with only 54,000 miles on it. He’s a big car guy, but slowly grew quite fond of his rolling toaster which was only meant to be a temporary DD.
He let me drive it a while back. Somehow more fun than the manual Soul I drove, and it’s better than any of the hamster cars because of the CUBE PUBE. (No, the Soul is better, but I still liked it). The car was largely physically flawless.
Anywho, fastforward to this morning. He tells me he’s looking for a new car tomorrow. Oh? And then he told me the usual Squicky Lube horror story: he got his oil changed two weeks ago at a scuzzy local shop. He usually takes it to his guy, but he had to take his family on an unexpected road trip and needed service in a pinch. He lives in an apartment complex where you can’t work on your own car (pretty typical around here).
Two Fridays later, the engine starts knocking.
He opens the hood.
The oil cap is GONE.
Oil is everywhere, and Nissan and his own mechanic say he needs a new engine. What’s a new engine installed from Nissan on a little old Cube cost? TEN GRAND. He bought the whole car for 5.
Goes back to the shop. Owner gets a little surly, only after saying, “Oh! Maybe the cap is still around here somewhere...” So he’s contacted their corporate office, and Nissan corporate (because why not at this point), to weigh his options. Sounds as though the shop will offer him something, though probably not ten grand, I’d bet.
He’s going to be fine, but he’s currently trying to close on a house, his wife just had a kid, and now he’s out a car, and he can’t wait around for however long it takes to get a cash offer from the shop. Just sucks.

I was control adjuster for a national chain of oil change shops for 9 months. Jesus, it was horrible.

My main takeaway from this though is the idea that a new engine for a cube is $10,000!

But why a new engine? His engine was no longer new.
Must be one somewhere in a junk yard with simular mileage.
Now is the time for him to engine swap to a LS make it RWD and make a hoon toaster. But this toaster only toasts tires.

The last time I went to a quick oil change place they somehow disconnected the MAF sensor, which threw a CEL. I have my own Bluetooth OBD2 reader so I figured it out immediately. But part of me thinks they did it on purpose so I would come back and they would diagnose something expensive. They shouldn’t have been anywhere near that plug.
That was 2 years ago and I’ll never go to one of those places again. Period.

AFAIK, the Cube wasn’t available with a sunroof, so for that reason alone, the Soul is better (and they even got panoramic for 2014+)

This sucks, no two ways about it.
But I’m amazed that the engine ran fine with the oil cap off, didn’t throw a code or anything? I left the oil cap off my wife’s car after an oil change, and it was really, really obvious in how it ran.
And yeah, the shop owes him an engine, or the full value of the car I guess at a minimum.
Will his insurance rent him a car while they sort it out with the shop?

I would rather do my oil change in a Walmart parking lot than truck a lube and tire place.
I mean I forgot to put my oil cap on once when I was 16. But then I learned to triple check everything. Drain plug torqued with a crush washer? Oil level checked? If you changed the filter is it Gutentite? Is the dipstick all the way in? Is the oil car in please? Is the hood actually latched? It’s not that hard to make a list and stick with it. Should be easier when you go through the same list 20 times a day.

Also: I have serious feels for his situation. Closing on a house makes you feel so broke that it isn’t even funny, let alone everything you need to buy afterward, moving costs, etc.

You can get very nice CC Volvo wagons, but you have to be able to write checks to fix them. Or a V70R. Damn, I would have a Volvo if I had to have a car, but I’d need a space to wrench on it, because it would need fixing every month.

That sucks, I hated the Cube when it came out but am rather fond of them now especially with the four spokes.
