The first is, the 262C was hit on Friday night... I’m still sick over it, but I’m in the process of dealing with insurance. With luck, they won’t try and total the old girl, because she’s an awesome car.

Kinja'd!!!

The other thing I learned is, she was the subject of one of Murilee’s “Down on the Street” articles, back in the day. Look, same plate number and all!

I remember that article. It blew my mind that such a thing existed and here we are.

To most people:

“It’s just some old car.”

Our reaction to that:

It’s also a 262C, so... Much, much fewer of them on the road. I found /two/ for sale in the US and the cheaper of the two was $6k, so I think I have a fighting chance at preventing a total loss.

So, your car is a celebrity. Why would they total it for that damage?

37 year old Volvo and Bay Area labor rates for repairs.

You better stay involved in the appraisal and insurance process because Insurance companies are thirsty AF trying to total cars and get you “the product” sold into another car loan.

Let’s just say that USAA and I have been in near-constant communication so far.

Yeah they play hardball sometimes, especially while peddling those 2.9% interest rates with painful stipulations (2 years old or newer)

It’s okay... It’s perfectly drivable and I have a 244 to go with it. I have the ability to wear them down.

If you can’t just look in the junkyard for parts, I might know someone with a taillight or two. Also, anything else you’d need for a 262 other than sheetmetal .

Noooooo

That quarter doesn’t look like it would be too tough to fix though; sourcing a bumper and tail light may be the sticking point :/

Bumper and taillight are the exact same as a 240. It should be an easy fix.

Oh, that’s good to hear. I saw in another comment that someone (maybe you) found these selling around $6k - I don’t think there’s any way that’s 6 grand in damage so you are probably okay (with zero research into your area and parts costs I figure a grand for bumper/light and $3-4k for the bodywork and blending the paint to match)

Update: USAA called and asked what the options were, and the woman was shocked when I went through and listed what it had... But, keep in mind, this was a $17k car in 1980, so equivalent to about $56.5k today.

It’s going to their specialty vehicle department, since apparently I have the only 262C they have insured, or at least the only ‘80 model. I’m willing to put money on it being the only B21FT-swapped one, too.
