The Alfa that might have never been...

The story of this review is one of a car and an owner who literally reeled me back in the game with a car. It wasn’t the Alfa however, it was the R35 GTR I reviewed earlier this year. I nearly quit this hobby at the beginning of the year. Got completely disenfranchised with the game that was and still is called YouTube. A place where people with names like Mike, Parker and kids with “XYZ” at 17 get everywhere and the regular Joe doesn’t have a prayer.

Enter Shane, who followed my videos like many others do. When I let my followers know I was close to quitting he stepped forward. And like Max Rockatansky I was seduced back in the game, all because of a car. As long as the paperwork is clean you can do whatever you want out there...

Fast forward to today. I have slowed my roll, edit a couple of videos a month and never been happier. I take more time per video and try to perfect my flow. Seeing it as a 100% hobby put everything in perspective.

The Alfa was a huge milestone for me. Ever since it came out I wanted to drive one. The owner of the GTR? He got the Alfa I coveted, and he allowed me to review it. I can tell you it was awesome, but I’d rather show you:

My neighbor just got one of these in red with the red interior. I haven’t had a chance to get in yet, but I’m looking forward to it. As long as I can avoid looking at that beak nose, I’ll be okay.

This is one of those cars I just assumed looked better in person because pretty much everyone was gushing over the thing. The I stumbled across an Alpha dealership with several of these and a few Stelvios. They’re both just as frumpy in person.

The 4C on the other hand may look even better in person than it does in photos. It’s a beautiful car.

Such a weird car for Texas. Haha.

Like a pretty girl with no personality, the 4C holds not interest for me because I don’t see it of being any use.

Fun is a use.

I don’t mind the “beak nose” as you put it. That pretty much has been a staple of Alfa due to the grille design. It is a very nice looking car, both inside and out.

The 4C? I actually reviewed one of those too! And I loved it... It still is the best handling car I have driven, and the launch control was unreal. Still can’t believe I got to review one of those. That happened just over a year ago today.

I’ve actually started to notice some on the road, non Quadrifoglio’s, but still. Very nice!

Fair enough. But there are lots of cheaper ways to have as much fun.

Depends. AFAIK there really isn’t a cheaper way to get into a (new) mid-engine sports car in the US market. Mid-engine sports cars are a special kind of fun.

Sure you could pick up an old MR-2 or Elise for cheaper, but those don’t make the power or sounds this thing does.

Well, I don’t doubt it’s fun and worth it for some people. What I see is that it’s loud, punishing on the driver (from all reports), and of poor build quality. That means it’s not good for daily transportation or a road trip. It’s a special-purpose toy for a very limited use. Now that’s great if you have that kind of money to throw at a whim, but most of us who can afford a toy will get something that we can afford to buy and fix and that is built better.

Also, and this is completely subjective, I think the 4C is ugly from the front. And mid-engined means nothing to me. So, if I want a fun second/third car that makes lots of power and sounds great, I’m getting an F-type or something like that. Different, but more fun. For me.

Yeah, I know it’s the brand grille, and it’s why I just don’t like the look of Alfas. However, everything else looks nice.
