Ok, so an old S60R will be a maintenance nightmare...

How about this ? I went and looked at it today, you would not be able to tell it has 180,000 miles from anything but the odometer. Car was in pristine shape inside and out, only signs of wear were a few mild stretch marks on the driver’s seat (clearly the owner was svelte) and a rub mark on the shifter. The rest of the pale interior looked untouched from dash to hatch, and the car drove beautifully. No warning lights, no weird noises or sensations, only a slight pull to the right which hopefully just means an alignment is needed. It’s a one-owner, local vehicle with extensive dealer service records. Is this likely to be a reliable DD, or will it rack up four figures in repairs and maintenance annually?

With good service history, might be alright.

Reread, and edited my original comment. I somehow missed that part.

Honestly, seems like a good choice to me. This will be a good all arounder I know nothing about that generation, but good service history means a lot. Just wait for the PPI to ratify that clean bill of health.

So you want to go from a used luxury SUV that had 180,000 miles and cost you $5,000 in repairs, to a used Volvo that has 180,000 miles that will cost you $X in repairs?

Spring for something with lower miles, or buy that Avalon.

My hope would be that the Volvo, being newer, would have less broken shit on it. Also, we weren’t able to have the LX inspected before we bought it and the dealer 100% lied about its condition, whereas this appears to be in much better shape and we can get it inspected.

Fair enough. Per oppo rules, all of your musings are subject to heavy criticism, until you actually buy something. After which, we will all praise your choice and congratulate you with glee.

Worth it if they give you a year bumper-to-bumper warranty. Otherwise, it’s a $3,500 car at best. And a PPI is a must. Trust, but verify.

Actually, you’d be amazed how many times I’ve seen/been the victim of, “You bought that? Why? Not a fan!”

Those people are tools.

$3500? At a wholesale auction, perhaps. KBB is $6100-$9500 from a dealer, down to about $5700 from a private party. Given that and the few other listings I can find for similar cars and I must say your appraisal seems less based in fact and more based in Oppo’s traditional valuation tool of “I wouldn’t pay more than $12 an a snickers wrapper for that thing.”

You might be right about that valuation tool ... I’d just seek one out from an owner, not a dealer. Lowest price, because Volvo, and because Volvo parts in some cases are more expensive than the equivalent Porsche/Audi part. Used to date a Volvo/MB/Rolls service manager. Volvo is expensive, although you might be able to get aftermarket bits for less. Just being cautious ...

Dude you sold the land cruiser because it was costing too much to fix... just get a Lexus/Acura or something actually reliable. Pissing money down the drain for repairs in college sucks, even if it isn’t you footing the bill.

Sigh, this is boring advice.

These XC70s are actually reliable. They don’t have any common problems, just normal stuff that wears out after a normal while.

That said, with mileage that high, the chances that there’s a lot of normal stuff ready to wear out are high! Like others have said, a thorough inspection, along with good service records should make it a good buy.

Also good to know: Volvo parts installed at a Volvo dealer have a lifetime warranty, and diagnostics and software updates are both free.

Granted we just drove it seven hundred miles, this is its 100K service, and I may have taken it off roading for about sixty miles of rutted rocky and gravelly terrain (probably the wrecked subframe mount is from that). Still, European car service is never cheap.
