New clutch, new car

I’ve owned 4 cars with manual transmissions, yet have avoided clutch replacements until now. I knew I needed to do it after a valet garage I park at for work refused to park it, due to how hard it was to shift. Of course, the one car I had to replace it on just so happened to be the most expensive to do so.

South Bend Stage 2 clutch : $1065
Audi OEM Flywheel : $1304
Labor : 10ish hours (requires dropping the entire transmission)

I was quoted around $6,000 from Audi, and got rates from just about every reputable indy Audi mechanic in the Greater Denver area, with quotes ranging from $3,300-$4,500. Nearing 100k, I considered replacing the entire car. Yet, I ended up going to my usual Audi Mechanic, as their estimate was about $3,700, including parts, and a warranty (they also threw in an oil change for me).

They ended up being able to salvage the original flywheel, saving me $1,300 amongst other fees.

In the end, I had no clue how terrible my stock clutch was. Being AWE Tuned, it was too much power for the stock clutch. The clutch was incredibly heavy, engagement wasn’t smooth, and I could start the car in 3rd gear. You definitely can feel the tune now...plus, it’s way more noticeable as to how much better the non-OEM shiftknob feels.

My heart sank at $6000 I’m glad it cost you a fraction of that.

Any reason you went with the stock dual mass flywheel? I know people that really like them, but I prefer a light single mass.

To be honest, I didn’t even know I had an option. I couldn’t find any non-OEM counterpart.

Me too - one shop suggested to be safe , that I replace the entire transmission with an OEM one. Their quote was around $9,100.

There are a few options. I forgot how funny the b8+ flywheels look since a driveshaft passes through them.

That’s the most Audi thing I’ve ever heard. Clutch worn out? Replace the transmission.

Just for perspective, I just had the clutch and flywheel replaced in my VW Transporter for the first time after 270,000 km. It cost me one third of the current used value of the entire vehicle. Dropping another $800 on tyres on Monday....

How long have you had them? How have they held up?

This is the first season with them - I covered maybe 5,000 miles on them...no issues.

I will tell you though, I have never owned anything that gets as many compliments as these wheels. Kinda it makes it worth the extra time you have to spend cleaning the things.

I feel ya. This repair was done after a misdiagnosis of the issue, so I have a new linkage and I’m $600 poorer-er.

I did the math - I could have traded this in on a CPO 2015 A3 2.0 P+ with 21K, and it only would have increased my monthly $13...haven’t regretted it yet.

Can’t help but agree! Seriously contemplating an A6 (need a large backseat), and would likely buy these or Niche Citrines for it.
