I'm buying a tundra!

So I found an 06 tundra, 230k miles, v6, listed at $4750. Took it in for a PPI, and it showed a misfire on 3 cylinders. The mechanic said it’s the best looking frame on that era Tundra he’s seen. So we were going to take in to our mechanic to try and diagnose the misfire, and negotiate a price. We also have the option of just 4 grand and the mystery box. Then I tackle spark plugs, coil packs, and see if I can make the misfire go away for less than that $750 and come out a little ahead, plus I learn how to start working on this truck. Or that could backfire and there’s a serious issue, but these engines are supposed to be bullet proof, and it’s been passing state emisions and safety inspection every two years.

Thoughts?

That’s still a lot of miles on everything. Is it drivable right now? I’d be worried about the condition of the transmission, brakes and suspension as well as just the engine. I think if your going to purchase it for $4,000 and a mystery box you should assume the engine is nuked and be prepared to pay for a new or newer engine or you should figure out what’s wrong or walk away.

Engine misfire was only thing that showed up on PPI, (well, it needs rear brakes and a license plate light, but OK). But yeah, I’m just wondering what the odds of nuked engine vs some minor fuel or ignition issues, and if I can fix said issues for less than 750. Or, not worth risk, get diagnosis first.

With that age and mileage, I would only want to spend $2000 on that.

Yeah yeah... I know... the used market for these is what it is and that price is actually cheap for a Tundra.

Funny thing is that in the comment preview it only showed your first sentence, so I had my “well actually” all cued up and ready to go. But I got here, so I guess I’ll just say I got him down to 3500.

Well that’s good... hope it works out and that the misfire is only due to it needing new plugs.

Yeah, I figure I got 1200 worth of spark plugs and coil packs, or fuel injectors and fuel pump, whichever way this goes, and do pretty well. If not, well, v8 swap?
