Shame. I really wonder if some Chinese company won’t swoop in and set up a CKD assembly shop in a warehouse somewhere, just to boast about selling the only “Australian built” car on the market.

Though, if Australian buyers cared where their cars were made, this might not be happening at all. Or, it still might, since the domestic market wasn’t large enough to sustain the whole industry.

it is big enough to sustain it, just GM, Ford and Toyota just didn’t make what people are now buying which is 4x4 twin cab utes and 4x4 wagons

The product mix certainly didn’t help. Ford and Holden, in particular, relied almost entirely on large RWD sedans, which aren’t really selling well anywhere in the world right now. Still, sustaining three volume automakers in a high cost country of 25 million was always going to be tough without significant exports.

true.

but it would be good if a Chinese company did come in and start assembling cars here.

I still want a wing for my SS. HSV needs to start mass producing their body panels and wings.

There were some rumors that Tesla might be interested, since they had so much trouble finding a joint venture parter in China, but now that the Chinese government seems to be leaning toward ending the JV requirement for alternative fuel vehicle manufacturers, that might be the end of that.

There was an article in the Australian over the summer. I can’t get to it now, since its behind a paywall.
