My favorite Ferrari 308 GTI in the July 1978 issue of R&T (which I still have) has it in silver with a red interior. Perfection.

When you want the 6MT you take whatever color they offer. I didn’t want red at first but now I’m glad I got it. Plus silver would have gotten me a black interior which I hate.

How do you feel about white?
I can’t deny that car colors are really boring these days and have been for years now. Sometime around 2001 or so, everyone quit painting cars interesting colors. By about 2003 most cars were silver, gold/beige, black, or white. Even gold/beige started dropping off around 2009 or so, now it’s just the remaining three dominating the palette.

You have a MT 5?! That must be stunning—I rented an auto from Zipcar two weeks ago and at 2500 feet here in Tucson it was struggling a bit—row your own would probably have made it much more manageable and quite fun because though it was slow, it cornered beautifully!

I will try with all of my being not to own the trifecta of black/white/silver in the future. I’ve been guilty of owning each of the boring colors in the past and will make sure future purchases of cars have some sort of hue to them.
However, if I get a Land Cruiser at some point, that’ll be a tough search. Unless it’s an 80, then you can find green all day long, it seems. Which I’ve also vowed never to own because of my horrific luck with green/tan color combo vehicles. So I guess I’m screwed there.

For such a practical vehicle it sure is a lot of fun. I wouldn’t have bought it with the auto, but with the 6MT it’s a different animal. That feature brings back happy memories of the old 968, the first car I ever had with a six speed. I was so used to having only 5 gears that I kept forgetting to upshift to 6th in that one, but in the Mazda it’s natural.

White’s not bad these days due to the relative rarity. It can be especially nice if it’s something a little different from the normal refrigerator white, a touch off white perhaps. I tend to go for the underdog, so if something is popular I try to avoid it, and no, I’m not a hipster...

I’ve always wanted a green/tan vehicle, or maybe even green/red (don’t laugh - it can look quite good; see Adam Carolla’s Aston Martin).
I’ve done black, twice - never again. I guess I didn’t learn my lesson. I’ve had a few white cars, but they were mostly hand-me-downs or other freebies, so I can’t really complain. I once bought a beige car because it was beige; I was building a sleeper so I wanted something dull and boring. The closest I’ve had to silver was Delphin Grey on the E34, and I love that color with it’s slight hint of green. I want to paint everything that color; either that color or the Copper Red Mica on my Mazda5, another color that has become an absolute favorite.
We need to be buying more blues and greens and yellows, maybe even orange cars. And they have to have contrasting interior colors. Nothing could be as dull as matched interior and exterior (like my dad’s first two BMWs - beige on beige). Black on black is also a snoozer. A friend had a nearly identical E34 to mine, right down to the 5MT, with the only difference between our cars being the interior color. Grey interior with dark grey exterior? Yawn. Beige interior with the dark grey exterior? Subtle, elegant, tasteful. If the exterior was beige I wouldn’t be saying the same thing.
