First gen neons themselves haven’t

I just like that there’s something sporty and fun about them (cheap and cheerful) without them having to look pissed off all the time like the later SRT4s.

I don’t know why so many modern cars have to look so aggro all the time. I feel the same way about the NC Miata, which is my favorite of the bunch (also because I’m not a small guy).

I’d love to have the Super20 concept from a couple years back. Too bad the Flyin’ Miata Targa kit (which is essentially a Super20) is almost as much as a used NC.

Yes, very fun cars! The ‘98 Neon RT I picked up (5 speed manual with roll down windows!) is excellent. Sure the paint is totally destroyed and the AC doesnt work and ive had to replace a lot of stuff on it. But overall its been easy to work on and parts are cheap. Fun little thing now that I got it running right. Still chasing a P0300 (random misfire) but otherwise its a nice thing to drive around.

Best part was I picked it up for $1000 and I shouldnt have too much trouble selling it for at least a little bit more.

I think the first Neon really was one of the few cars to properly employ the concept of “cheap and cheerful”. It was fun, it was small, and it was really quite classless. Almost like an original Mini, although with shitty plastics.

And the Neon was even mildly successful outside of North America, which is quite rare for a Chrysler product after Rootes was sold off.

I read that “fun to drive” was actually primary a design goal for them.

Yeah, same. Good luck finding one that hasn’t been absolutely beat to hell though, they’ve almost all had rough lives.

The clear coat fade on the hood reminds me of the hellcats’s hood vents.

I listen to Prime Country (‘80s and ‘90s Country on Sirius XM) and it has a promo that has the sounds of a car trying to start. And the announcer says “The sun hasn’t set on these ‘80s and ‘90s country hits. Unlike that ‘94 Plymouth Neon you listen to them in.”

The Neon was a great example of where Chrysler was heading before the Daimler-Benz takeover.

Was it perfect? No. Was it a big improvement over what came before, and pretty decent all round? Yes. It was certainly a promising sign, and the fact that they were putting out cars like that was definitely a factor in making Chrysler Corp. an attractive takeover target.

The advertising was great, too. There’s a billboard on the highway near my parents’ house that I always pass when I go home for a visit, and I still clearly remember in my mind that it had one of these ads on it back in the mid ‘90s. How many billboards do you pass on the highway, and are able to remember exactly what they were advertising 20 years ago?

I’m trying to imagine this car with 700 horsepower. It would just be scary. I think I’d rather light a match in a gas station, it would be safer
