My son’s HS band is performing in a competition tomorrow in Midland and I’m going along to volunteer on the pit crew for the show. It’s a long drive, and it’s state or US highway the whole way. No interstate. Fortunately, the speed limit is 75 in most parts of rural Texas. If the band makes the finals, they won’t leave the stadium until close to midnight. If that happens, I’ll get a hotel and head home on Sunday morning.
I’m a sucker for a long drive (road trips run in our family), and I’ve made the drive to Abilene over a 100 times but never been over to the area around San Angelo. And the first part of the drive out through Marble Falls is some of the prettier parts of the Hill Country.

Marble Falls is gorgeous. One of these days I need up there for the drag boat races.

Jesus, you drive 5 and a half hour any direction in Illinois and you wind up in another state. Hell 5 hours from my house lands me in either Wisconsin sells, Cincinnati Ohio, or st. Louis. Texas is fucking huge

I’ve been to MF on numerous occasions, mostly to play church gigs. We’ve talked about going to the boat races, but never made it out. They also have annual soap box derby races, though it’s not the sort of karts you’d think. Check out these shots from a race I went to a couple of years ago.

Have a nice drive.
Midland... I’ve only spent a couple days there (giving training to some others in the company), and each afternoon I’d end up with a sinus headache because of how dry it was.

It’s pretty crazy. I came from VA, where I marched in a very small band in the 1980s. The mentality here in TX towards both band and football is ridiculous.

Spent a fair amount of time in the Dallas to San Antonio stretch of Texas but have never been during football season. If that changes and I happen to be there on a Friday night, I know where I’ll be.
