Why are all these car companies stopping production down there? Is it some how cheaper to just import cars etc. to Australia?

they were all getting subsidies from the Government, but Tony Abbott (Former PM) said basically “no more handouts” so Ford and GM said bye.

Toyota also a lot of mutual suppliers as Ford and GM, so as a lot of the suppliers are going under, toyota had no other option

They did away with protectionism. There used to be tariffs on imported cars. Without these it doesn’t make much sense to make cars in Australia as the local market is small and costs are too high for exports to be feasible.

Having so said Toyota gave as their reason for pulling out that because everyone else was leaving the remaining components market was too small for parts makers to bother with.

Many and possibly most of the cars and other vehicles sold in Australia are sourced from SE Asia where costs are much lower.

So how are new cars going to get there then if all the factories are going out of business?

Shipped in from other countries, just like how imports are brought in to any other country.

It’s just that they won’t have domestics or locally-produced “imports” any more.
