UPDATE : I am hearing beeping noises on startup, then it stops once I get to the error message. It’s the first time I’m hearing this beep, and it never beeps like that for as long as I’ve been using it.

So here I was, just finished breakfast, then I had a shower, then turned my Aspire ZC-605 on. It greeted me with a “Reboot and select proper boot device” error.

Now about 15 hours later I lie in my bed worried shitless about all the files stored there, among other things like browser bookmarks. What do I do? The HDD is top priority on boot, and now I’m scared at the thought that the disk is shot.

Try doing a deep power cycle. Shut the PC down unplug the power cord. Then with it unplugged hold down the power button for a minimum of 1 minute. I’ve seen this fix this issue quite a few times.

If nothing else works, remove the HD, put it in a dock, and try to retrieve files.

I had an SSD with a bad boot sector. All the files were safe when I put it in a dock.

Two things; pull the disk immediately and get it into an enclosure and try to get the data off that way, as Jarrett stated.

Second, remember that data that isn’t backed up is data you neither want nor need. I’ve got 2 2tb external WD passport drives and back everything up weekly.

I would reboot and select the proper boot device. :P

+1 on Jarrett’s advice.

Sounds like the Windows boot partition is messed up in some way causing the computer to not be able to boot into the OS. Is it giving you a system level BIOS type error or a Windows error (does it look like a Windows blue screen or error window or is it just plain text on the screen?)? If you have Windows installation media you can try repairing the installation. If not you should be able to recover your personal data using another PC to look at the contents of the drive.

What’s the beep? Is it LOONG, short short short? Or LOONG LOONG LOONG?

Oh god I wish you were here right now.

It’s short beeps at about 1-second intervals.

Short short short? Anything else? Beep codes are like Morse code.

Oh no, no, all my school files and other key files are backed up in SD cards.

The ones on my PC are most of my race track doodles, some listing of cars in plain text, deranged rants, passwords for my throwaway accounts, and 5 movies.

Well I think the onboard disk controller has taken a dump. Good news: your files should be fine and readable if you put the HDD on a sled. Bad news: The lappy is likely a paperweight now :(

I’ll need a second opinion, but for now, thank you, and fuck me.

I hear ya. I can’t find specific beep codes for your unit (or nearly any data for your unit at all). My ‘diagnosis’ is based on speculation and previous experiences. I highly recommend getting a second.
