How does Oppo stream?

What device(s) does Oppo use for streaming? My tv does Amazon and Netflix. I have a PS3 that I haven’t used for streaming in forever so I don’t know what it does any more beyond Netflix. I used to have 3rd? gen Apple TV (the first one that could download apps) that had everything I used except Amazon (for whatever reason Amazon and Apple don’t get along) but that stayed with my ex after the break up. I have an early gen Apple TV but I think it only does Hulu and Netflix.

I mostly watch Netflix and Hulu but I used to use the various specific station apps to watch football during the season or amc during walking dead seasons. HBO app for all their various goodness.

Long story short, it’s annoying to have to hop between devices for streaming since I don’t have cable. Now there are so many different devices at different prices it’s a web to crawl through. What do y’all use? The new Apple TV is appealing since I’m familiar and own several Apple products but the price is the highest. I have a 4K tv so would be nice to be able to take advantage of that. Suggestions?

I use my Xbox One for Netflix, SportsNet, CBC, NHL, Youtube, and Crackle. I have an old computer running Kodi attached to the TV too.

I’ve had a roku 3 for several years now. It’s one of the ones that has a small box, not the stick. I love it. I use it for netflix, hulu, amazon prime, hbo go, and a few other things. The interface is simple and easy to use. The remote works well, and it has a headphone jack on the remote so I can watch without bothering anyone else. If you search on roku for a movie or show, it searches across all of the installed channels which is pretty cool. I think that the new Roku does 4k.

I used to use my ps3 for streaming, but the cooling fans were pretty loud and o wanted to try to preserve it for actual gaming.

Ps3 streaming Netflix, hulu, amazon. Going to switch to roku just for the ability to search all the streaming sites for content from one search engine. I can never remember what site has what shows so that feature will be nice.

I use a Chromecast for pretty much everything (Netflix, Hulu when I used it, SlingTV when I used it, HBO Go, ESPN, Youtube, Twitch). They’re fairly cheap, and interface well with an Android phone. Amazon Prime doesn’t play nice with Chromecast either, but my ancient PS3 handles the Amazon stuff.

We started with an XBONE in the living room supplemented with a chromecast. Then my wife bought me a tv with Roku built in. Fantastic! The ability to search for content across all of our subscriptions is amazing. Sometimes I go to the bedroom, search for a show, then go back to the living room to watch it. I’m need a Roku for the living room. Either that, or a new tv!

Well, I went from DINK to SINK. Income went down, expenses went up.

We’re SINK right now and I’m paying for (a chunk of) her degree. Once that starts paying off though (in a couple years because she graduates in December and at least one year of her salary is 100% dedicated to pay off the loans) we’re gonna be in a mighty-good place ;)

At least I hope. I’d like to retire soon.

Roku has the widest variety of support for different streaming services. I have a Roku 4 in my living room and a Roku 2 (it was like a 2nd or 3rd gen Roku 2, they keep renaming stuff) in my guest room.

I also have a Chromecast in my living room because the screen mirroring relies on Miracast which is a less widely-supported standard. I also tend to use the Chromecast for if I’m watching something live through the ESPN app because the ESPN Roku app tends to struggle to keep a full-resolution & frame rate stream. But that’s because I’m cheap, don’t pay for cable, and use my dad’s Comcast login for the ESPN app.

For the most part, with the exception of Amazon, I probably could get by with a Chromecast, but while navigating to things on your phone and slinging them to the Chromecast is generally fine, unless I’m specifically trying to type out and search for something, I still like the experience of on-screen menus from the Roku.

Another nice feature of the Roku 4 is that there’s a headphone jack in the remote so if I’m watching at night after my wife goes to bed, I can use headphones and not make noise. The sound quality kinda sucks though. Since Roku has refreshed their lineup, the newer devices all support listening through the Roku app on your phone. Not sure if it sounds better.

Of the current lineup, the Roku Stick+ and Roku Ultra support 4K. The Ultra adds ethernet, microSD & USB ports, and the fancier remote with the headphone jack, and remote finder feature where you can press a button on the Roku itself and it’ll make the remote beep.

If you want 4K, I’d probably just do the Stick+. Private listening still works through the app, and for files that are on my computer that I want to view on the Roku, I use Plex to share them over my network instead of physically plugging something into the Roku.

I had a plan to be debt free by the end of this year but that went out the window. Business was down this summer. Dog surgery. Break up and subsequent moving expenses. Not a good year for me financially. Well, not a good year for me in general

If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that everything will do its best to put you off track. Roll with those punches, keep your end-game in sight, and keep at it. If you dwell on the bullshittery then, my friend, you’re stuck in it.

I built a cheap, small form factor PC a few years ago with an i3 and small SSD. Plug in to TV, add rechargeable, wireless keyboard with touch pad and it’s good to go for anything. I frequently use it for Netflix Amazon, YouTube, videos from my home file server, and Steam streaming.

Btw, not sure if screen mirroring is something you’d use much, but I just realized I didn’t specify that Roku screen mirroring is Miracast.

Windows and some but not all Android devices support Miracast. Mac, iOS and Chrome OS don’t. Apple wants you to use AirPlay and Google wants you to use Chromecast, but Android supports Miracast if a device manufacturer includes Miracast hardware and enables it in software.

I don’t use the Chromecast as my primary media streamer, and I don’t use screen mirroring too often, but for me it was worth the 35 bucks as a complement to the Roku. Because it works with my Macbook Pro, my wife’s Chromebook, and all our phones and tablets.

True, it’s definitely not the cheapest option. I just like the flexibility and freedom in software choice and configuration too much.
