Looks Like My Next Car Will Be a Convertible

Whelp, since everything will be paid off in another 16 months and Im still just over 5 years out from buying a home I have decided to go for my convertible plan. This would be in 2020 or later so here are the three choices:

*If the XF or Grand Cherokee go then Id need to scratch these for a Stinger or the upcoming CT5.

The F-Type would be very easy to live with and maintain. All the new Jaguars coming out after 2012 were moved down market considerably. Though sad to see that means a huge jump in ease of ownership.

I favor the shortlived V8 S Convertible. They’ll be under $35,000 as soon as next year so I can plan $30,000 for 2020.

The choices for convertibles that can seat four adults is pretty tiny and that’s where these are a huge value. Being able to drive three other adults, top down, downtown in a naturally aspirated Ferrari V8 with the theatre and timeless design of a historic Maserati for under $45,000 is definitely a compelling experience. Every outing would be an event and those events would be well documented through photographic archives and exaggerated stories of mythical adventures no matter how mundane the actual quest was.

I would need a car built as late as possible — definitely after the refresh — less for the design update and more for the touch ups Maserati always does yearly to address ownership issues. Ill also need to find a shop out here and do a lot of research and prep for upkeep.

The third choice would be a Vantage if I decide that I want a manual convertible. Again, I would need to do a lot of research on caring for these and find a place that can help me out. I mean that as in I prefer every vehicle I own to be kept in a condition in which I could make an 8 hour drive without any hesitation, doubts, and without a day of prep.

Those will be the options and it will all depend on which one fits my needs and my specifications at the time. I only plan to place 2,500 miles a year on any of them and it’s all about early morning and late night driving.

All great choices! I’ve almost gotten a granturismo a couple times but like manual transmission too much. Also thought about a vantage but not a fan of the styling too much and worried about repair costs.

Can’t believe f types are getting so cheap. I’d love to have one of those

I’m in sort of a similar boat for next year with lots of plans and research, but for a new daily. I was actually hoping to post to OPPO as well for advice on my top contenders. No convertibles, though one targa.

My vote goes to the Vantage because manual, but practically speaking should be the F-Type. Either way, drool...

If you really buy one of these, I will be very excited. Go for the Maserati. I’m speaking with my heart here, not with my head, but how could you not if you get the chance for a good one.

About the F-Type going a little down market from where Jag used to be, that may have some truth to it. I tested one, and while very nice, the cabin wasn’t as special as I was expecting it to be.

Im more into Maserati than any other automotive brand so it’s a dream. I need to go ahead and start doing Maserati focused posts like I keep promising myself I would.

I’ll write something up soonish, it will be fun. This is the same car I removed the rear and passenger seats purely because I got overhyped when I first heard the “add lightness” quote.

Look idk where you’re from, but Maseratis aren’t special.

They’re super common. Like, I see way more Maseratis than Jaguars or non-SUV Porsches.

Like my step brother works a Lexus/Maserati dealership, and he’s like “even new, they’re pieces of shit”. Hell, he said he’d take my 300 over a Ghibli every day of the week. And he’s Italian, so it’s super hard for him to admit when anything Italian is inferior.

911 Cab or Targa are the best

N/A Ferrari V8? Check. Seats four? Check. Convertible? Check. Why not add a gated shifter? Mondial Cabriolet. Checkmate.

I’m a GT guy. I need weight, ride, and the ownership experience since I’d like to own an exotic car one day without having to change my lifestyle. When I decide I’m ready for a sportscar experience then I’ll be all over those.

For the Maserati, the purchase price will be the first payment. I suspect some of the switchgear and engineering is also marginal - and in my area, those things have an image of a car of choice for the guillotine-worthy devilspawn of offshore-based money laundering “investors”. I hope the exhaust note is worth it. I suspect the AM will be more expensive than the Jag or Maserati combined, while still having maintenance bills like a castle  - the HR world must really be seeing pay hikes :)

I just returned from Germany, where my rental car was - a Jaguar F-Type S roadster, 380hp 6cyl model:

Kinja'd!!!

Pros - the noise, the top down fun, the baby Aston-Martin looks, everything worked, mileage wasn’t too bad.

Cons - laughable trunk, quaint retro ICE and camera, a couple annoying rattles (it did have 12K miles on it, no doubt rough miles).

The Jaaaag might be the deal here.
