sadly, yes, it is an air filter and pretty much just a plastic U with some foam

It’s not complicated at all, it’s just a plastic housing with some foam in it. Just like in most other cars. The issue seems to be that it isn’t serviceable and thus will be more expensive to replace.
I do wonder why they do this though. Is it to make more money on parts/servicing?

i don’t think it was too badly priced though, audi service parts are generally good value
