Another cherry 80s Merc on W. 24th ... I had an ‘87 300D, but did not think the inline 6 was used the next year. That’s likely an ‘88 - I can tell from the body cladding, which was black on my car. Or perhaps the cladding was replaced by an owner who thought it looked bad on a white car. Also, PA tags, so could be a dealer. And a bonus Ron Paul sticker.

I get to plan pedant anorak again :)

This is a 1990-93 car. Side cladding is the key, first series W124s like yours had the thin black door strips. MY 1990 saw a mild facelift, with more flush side cladding, and usually a two tone paint scheme. The final run 1994-95 cars had yet another facelift. White over grey was quite popular then, and looks good on these cars.

So the ‘90-93 cars had a 2.5 liter 5 (?) cylinder. The badging on the rear of the white one is the badging my car had. The car you reference was a 300D but also said 2.5 Turbo on the rear end. It also had strakes on the side (didn’t see any, but I can double check in the morning if the car is still there. So WTF? Badge engineering?

I miss cars designed like boxes. I hate new cars designed like bars of soap.

Find yourself a cherry 240DL man - that’s as simple as it gets.

I am going by memory, as my internet access is sketchy right now, and I can’t check online references. I think the fender vents were part of the MY 1990 updates (actually air intakes, previously located between the fender and door on cars like yours). These were only on the passenger side, and also seen on 190D 2.5 models.

For the badging, I think the switch to the I5 model also happened with the 1990 update. I assume all cars in the PA/NJ/NY area have been crashed and rebuilt lol, so this could have been an error during bodywork. Or, this could be a model like yours with an updated fender and cladding. Hard to tell.
